I heard this cd on a local classical music program, and liked his playing...so I purchased the cd.

The sound is immaculate and as gorgeous as it can be, and Hopkinson Smith is a consummate master -- expressive sensitivity and technical perfection.

Definitely a must have lute-album, whether or not you already have or intend to get a complete Dowland set as well.

Although Smith does not record the complete works of Dowland, as do O'Dette, Lindberg and North, what we have in 'A Dream' is a much deeper exploration of a stunning selection of Dowland's lute pieces. Smith has said in interviews that he is much more the type who like to go into depth, spending months on a single piece rather than skimming the surface of several. This certainly pays off in this Dowland disk, perhaps the finest recording of Dowland's lute pieces ever made.

This is not to suggest that other lutenists, particularly O'Dette and North, play without feeling. But in the case of those 'complete works' recordings, the artists, faced with over a hundred pieces to learn and perfect, tend to slip into discernable charaterisations of all similar pieces. Each slow piece is given 'the slow piece treatment', each quick piece likewise - not without some beautiful results, but yet, with depths left unexplored. Hopkinson Smith's approach is to really find and explore the character of each individual piece, leaving no detail unaccounted for, giving no moment an habitual, un-considered treatment. Comparing Smith's 'A Dream' with the complete sets, one can feel that Smith has really 'lived' with these pieces and is much more intimate with the music than his fellow lutenists. The lines in Dowland's contrapuntal masterpieces, 'farewell' and 'a Fancy' (P.1) are truly brought to life under Smith's fingers and made to sing. The spirit and character of the dances and pavans are wonderfully well-expressed. The result is an emotional complexity and intensity unique to Smith's perormance, born out of absololute care for every detail and remarkable dramatic-poetic powers of expression.

Definitely a must have lute-album, whether or not you already have or intend to get a complete Dowland set as well.

I think this is an excellent disc of Dowland. Hopkinson Smith has been one of the world's foremost lutenists for many years now and he shows why here, bringing immense charm and beauty to a selection of Dowland's finest pieces.

Dowland himself was arguably the greatest lutenist of his time and left a very substantial body of work, much of it in the melancholy style which was very fashionable in England in the late 16th and early 17th Centuries – hence his famous "Semper Dowland, simper dolens." However, he also wrote spirited dances and pieces with real charm and Smith has chosen a fine selection here. Some are very well known like the great Earl Of Essex's Galliard (the instrumental setting of the song Can She Excuse), others are more obscure but no less enjoyable. It's a lovely programme and a disc which can be listened to from beginning to end without it ever flagging or beginning to sound samey.

This is an large part due to Hopkinson Smith's wonderful playing. He has a lovely sweetness of tone which almost sounds like a Spanish guitar at times and a slightly freer rhythmic approach than some other performers and I find the combination very attractive. He also has a fabulous skill which allows him to make some of these very demanding pieces sound utterly simple and natural. He sounds almost playful in some of the trills and incredibly quick runs in Lady Hunsdon's Allemande, for example, and an air of real love for the music pervades the whole disc.

I have quite a few recordings of Dowland which I love, including complete recordings by Lindberg, North and O'Dette. This stands very well beside those three giants of modern lute playing. It isn't a Complete Works, of course, but it's a hugely enjoyable disc of some terrific Dowland and I'd recommend it both to anyone looking for a sample to try and to seasoned Dowland veterans like me. It's a real beauty.

Absolutely exquisite. The sound is immaculate and as gorgeous as it can be, and Hopkinson Smith is a consummate master -- expressive sensitivity and technical perfection. The compositions by Dowland are magical. I wish this were a boxed set with enough hours to go on and on and on. It is a generous CD, but one gets greedy and wants ever more of something this lovely.
