Book Description

Approaching middle age, Ramona Simms doesn't live a colorful life. She has a dead end job, a gassy dog, and a mother who believes marriage is the only measure of success for a woman. She dreams her childhood idol, the retired rocker Jesse Alexander, will take her away from everything someday, but the only Prince Charming in her real life is her coworker, the persistent, colorless, Virgil.

Then Ramona learns Jesse is coming out of a retirement to do a series of concerts. Convinced this is her destiny calling, Ramona sets out on the journey of a lifetime, dreaming to turn her black and white life to something far more colorful.

4.0 out of 5 stars A 'feel-good' read April 12, 2010
Format:Paperback
Originally posted at [...]

Have you ever fantasized about a rock star?

Ramona has resigned herself to being single and unfulfilled in her work and personal life. To counter the daily drudgery she spins fantasies in her head about her favorite crush, pop star Jesse Alexander. In fact, she spends so much of her time dreaming about Jesse that he seems more real to her than her actual life. When life goes terribly sour at work, Ramona makes an impulsive decision to grab life by the horns and follow her dream - and lucky for her, her "dream" happens to be going on tour. She decides to spend the summer following Jesse's tour, hoping against hope he will notice her. When circumstances arise that allow her to meet Jesse in person, she decides to "go for the dream". Jesse isn't at all what she expects, however, and that could spell trouble for her fantasy.

Dream in Color is essentially a story about a woman who got sick of the status quo and decided to do something about it. The protagonist, Ramona Simms, is single, has gained too much weight, and lost too much of herself and her sense of fun. Her life has become stale and many of us can relate to that. Ramona decides to do something about it however, and that makes her interesting. The story unwinds itself along the road as she follows the band, finally meets Jesse and gets to know him as a real person.

Ramona is a well-developed character and I liked her; by the end of the book I was rooting for her to get what she wanted. Jesse, too was believeable and seemed real.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, wonderful characters! June 2, 2013

First book I read by this author! A wonderful story about a woman who gives up her mundane life to follow her dreams! Not knowing where this journey will lead her, she leaves her job, family and friend(s) to follow her life long rock star crush on tour.
The author does a great job portraying the characters sadness and sense of desperation about her life and the hope and possibility of a life filled with fun, laughter and love!
Thank you Sarah J Bradley for a great read, I look forward to reading more of your stories!

5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing read that lifts your mind and spirit October 4, 2010
Format:Paperback
Everybody is telling Ramona Simms to live the reality of life not seek the dreams she has always held. Ramona is well educated, mid-30s, unmarried and working in a boring job which all pleases her mother except the unmarried part. Ramona still has faith that her life can be more and when she gives up her job and sedentary life to chase the dream of following her rock star idol on his summer tour everyone but Ramona thinks she is chasing nonsense. Ramona has loved Jesse Alexander since she was a young adult and always thought of him as Prince Charming and has kept him in her mind and dreamed of conversations with him opening doors to worlds she never would consider. This opportunity to see him on a reunion tour after years of being out of the spotlight is telling her to answer the nagging voices in her head and hit the road to see what is out there calling to her. Life is for living and not being slowed down by speed bumps and Ramona is energized and takes off on the summer tour following Jesse Alexander rock superstar.

Really quickly Ramona discovers that life on the road is not all it is cracked up to be and maybe this is not such a great idea. Then something magical and dream fulfilling happens when she wins a back stage pass to meet Jesse. Every dream she had about him turns out to be a nightmare as he is not fun and exciting just older and more worn down by life. Yet Ramona seems to energize him and she agrees to run away with him if only for a few days and drive to his next concert. During the days and nights that follow they both learn what it is to have aspirations unfulfilled, love gone wrong and dreams die too young.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be August 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Initially I found Ramona to be annoying - a 35 year-old woman with an adolescent obsession with a retired teen heartthrob. Ramona reminded me of my best friend growing up who went through a phase where she was determined to marry Scott Baio and to get the rest of us to believe her. She outgrew it but Ramona never did. As the story progressed, albeit slowly, I appreciated the author's ability to convey the ideas of dullness, blandness, and a life filled with color. I don't compose but I sang and played an instrument for many years and I really enjoyed experiencing Ramona's total immersion in her music along with her. I think the author described it perfectly.

The story did not end the way I expected. I would prefer to see cover art that more accurately depicts the characters; Jesse has hair long enough to toss over his shoulder and flop in his eyes in the story and the guy's on the cover is cut short. I also think the last chapter could have been longer and/or developed into an epilogue. Virgil ended up being a much more appealing character than the book description lets on and he deserves some epilogue time.

While there is physical intimacy between characters it is largely left to the imagination, without any graphic description. The reader who is looking for "spice" or "steam" should look elsewhere.

More About the Author

Welcome!

My name is Sarah J. Bradley, and I'm an author. That means that I may look completely normal to the outside world, but in my head are worlds and characters and stories that are anything but normal. Writing is my escape, my therapy, and my passion. I'm more than overjoyed to be able to share it with others.

I'm a life-long Midwestern girl, grounded in traditinal values. But I'm also a student of life, an observer. I am facinated by people, places, and stories that are not my own. I believe we could all have our own beliefs, lifestyles, and values and still live peacefully as a society...if we would stop taking ourselves so seriously.

I choose to laugh.

Life is hard enough without everyone getting into some sort of social media war. I believe if we ignored the shrieking of politicians and others who are determined to make us see our differences as evils, and instead looked at ourselves and each other and found joy and laughter, this would be a better world.

I've been writing and telling stories since I was a small child, but I didn't think of writing as a career until I was in my early teens and started my first novel, a book that eventually became "Lies in Chance," which will probably always be my favorite novel of the ones I've written.

I'm a self published author, an independent author, a free thinker when it comes to my characters and my stories. I revel in the freedom of e-publishing because it's given unknown authors like me a place to tell our stories. My dream is to some day support myself and my family with my writing.

I write under a couple different names. If you're looking for romantic suspense, you'll want my "Sarah J. Bradley" books. If you're looking for humor, for a view of every day life that's a bit skewed, or for workplace tales that are entirely too painfully true and hilarious, you'll want to read my "Sarah Jayne Brewster" books. And, coming very soon, if you want something suspenseful and quirky, but with one foot firmly grounded in an inspirational, faith-based point of view, I will be starting a new series of books under the name "S.J. Brady" later in 2014.

On this website you'll find links to my books and my blogs. My hope is that you'll find joy and escape in my stories and laughter in my blogs. If you do, then my work here is done!
