Book Description

October 30, 2008
Sometimes life teaches a woman that she must learn to stand on her own against adversity, even when she knows there are others who will stand with her.The eccentric Jason Claymere, Marquis of Ravensworth, is looking for a wife. Since he doesn't believe in love, any wife should do. But the current offerings-innocents and frightened young fillies-cringe at his scarred countenance, and widows simply cannot be trusted. Hardened from the years spent in war, he has no real use for society's strictures.Emily Smith, a young American widow, leaves battered memories behind as she searches for her mother and her maternal family in England. What she finds instead is danger and a handsome marquis who saves her life. However, Emily will never trust another man-to be at the mercy of any man ever again is unacceptable. While these two waltz around pride and deeply imbedded fears, someone rages as he plots revenge. Jason and Emily must learn to trust each other before both their pasts rip them apart forever.

About the Author

Once upon a time, I decided to listen to the voices in my head. I figured it would be more cost effective than therapy. What was I thinking? They now demand attention and I try to comply, writing one story after another lest a character or my muse get their feelings hurt. Oh the agony! Yet I must admit, I'm so happy my imaginary friends grew up with me! Some I traded in for entire families that only live in my head until I bring them to life on a keyboard. Now, I can't imagine not writing. My family lives in Texas with two mismatched cats, a pair of corgis who know they rule the domain, and two betas the boys haven't managed to kill off yet. When not writing, I'm usually found trying to catch up on housework or running late with the family.

Jaycee Clark is a good writter. Her story actually has a plot and character developement which many romance novels sorely lack. Also unlike many other story tellers, her villians are believable and the villan within these pages is a good one in a creapy, unlikeable way.

I flew through this book and went to her web site to see if she had written a sequel as there are at least 3 characters in this book that could use their own story and was dissappointed to see she had not. Although at one point her heroin became a little tedious (as they often do in romance novels) Clark got her back on track quickly and the hero is just that, a hero.

For those who like a lot of hot sex scenes, this is more along the lines of a traditional regency.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent historical romance, April 19, 2010
This review is from: The Dream (Paperback)
1813: Emily Smith is a young American widow who went through hell with her abusive father and the equally violent and cruel husband he married her to. Finally free, she travels to England to try and find her missing mother and the grandparents she never met. But the night coach she's in is attacked and the badly injured Emily left for dead. By sheer luck, Jason Claymere, the Marquis of Ravensworth, finds her near his country estate and saves her. He soon knows she's the right woman for him, but after what she went through with men it takes him a while to convince her to marry him. But even then things remain difficult: His position as a spy for the British against Napoleon and her painful past bring life-threatening danger into their lives...

This is an emotionally intense novel with fascinating characters. The historical situation (especially regarding women and the absolute power their husbands had over them) is well-researched and convincingly portrayed. I was drawn into the novel and couldn't put it down. Such high quality and intensity is rarely found and I would highly recommend this book.
The novel is complete and doesn't have an open ending, but there is a lot of potential for sequels, in particular since some side topics (e. g. where Emily's mother and sister are, what will happen with the French spy DeFleur, the next mission of Jason's friend) fairly scream to be told in at least one other novel. I really hope the author will tell more stories in this world.
