By A Customer
This review is from: The Dream Keeper and Other Poems (Paperback)
The Dream Keeper and Other Poems is essential for anybody trying to share the beauty of Langston Hughes with children. The poems in this collection rank among Hughes' finest. Pinkney's illustrations compliment the imagery of the poetry wonderfully. Children and adults will become true Langston Hughes fans after reading this introductory book.

The Dream Keepers and other poems is a book that you must read. Langston Hughes puts you through so many different moods during this book. The poems reach out to you. I especially like the I,TOO poem. This poems speaks about progress, determination, and being focused. There is a poem for everyone to connect with. The illusrations by Brian Pinkney are black and white with a lot of curvy lines. There was a great of time put in each. The pictures assist in putting you in the mood of the poem. The only thing left to say is read the book!

Words Come Alive,
By Pamela Sloss (Union, SC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dream Keeper and Other Poems (Paperback)
Hughes' words come to life in this book of poetry. This collection, originally issued in 1932, is as powerful as it was seventy years ago. As an added bonus, there are seven new poems for the reader to enjoy. The struggle and celebration of the African-American experience is apparent here. Brian Pinkney's black-and-white scratchboard illustrations add life and expression to the poems. Hughes' classic collection is appealing and inspirational. This astonishingly wonderful set of poems is definitely a collection that would spark the interest of children learning about poetry. Hughes' gift of lively words live on!

The book "The dream Keeper" by Langston Hughes is a complete tresure. The first time i saw it was in high school, the poem i had to read was "As I grew older". It really inspired me to fight and never loose faith in what I belive in. African american poetry, in general, are great poems to have and keep for eternity. they teach us to respect and accept everyone for who they are, without looking at the color of their skin.God Bless!!!

This is real poetry that you can see, hear, and feel in your heart and head. Langston Hughes has captured our hopes, dreams, life and love and put it in words. This book is a great stepping stone to making fabric dream catchers to hang about. It cries out to be shared.

I liked it overall. The book is simple but the word is at much higher level than the reading level it is intended for.

Great poetry book - good gift for teens and rap enthusiasts,

This review is from: The Dream Keeper and Other Poems (Paperback)
Great poetry book, collection, good poetry from Langston Hughes. Nicely put-together collection of fine poetry, reflecting a wide range of emotions. Artwork illustration is on every page. The artwork is of one motiff, similar to that of the cover page. It works well and helps blend everything together. The good thing about Hughe's poems, is he has enough short poems to capture the short attention span when you don't feel like reading too deep, but at the same time, like a Haiku, he says a lot in a few words.Buy the book as a gift for any teen who might have some interest in poetry, or in recent American/African American history. Recommend it or buy it for anyone who is into hip hop or rap. The roots of rhytmic expression can be traced back here. This is the more pure artform, that has given way to somewhat or fully corrupted lyrics of boastful mega-rappers. Langston Hughes is the real thing, the real artist who doesn't need to use profanity and insult people to express himself wonderful in a poignant way that touches you, even without music, more powerfully than the lyrics of today's rappers. This is true art, not ephemeral shock-art. Good book for classroom, English, American History, middle school, good gift for teens, young adults and anyone who appreciates poetry or African American history and roots. |
