Editorial Reviews

The renowned Norwegian guitarist who has previously contributed to ECM recordings with Nils Petter Molvær, Marilyn Mazur, Arve Henriksen, Andy Sheppard, Arild Andersen and Jon Hassell with a first leader disc for the label, recorded in Kristiansand and Oslo. Dream Logic is aptly named, its slowly developing drifting pieces, built up from layers of guitars, have an almost hallucinatory quality, an otherworldly ambience. Jan Bang, who is co-composer of a number of the pieces, also contributes sounds and samples, and co-produced the disc.

Eivind Aarset has some experience as a heavy metal musician, but the thing here is his skill as a contributor to outstanding ECM records with Nils Petter Molvær, Marilyn Mazur, Arve Henriksen, Food and others.
In «Dream logic» we enjoy the layers of processed guitar and the blurred transition to samples and programming. The outworldly ambience and the spatial sound is an ineffable signature of ECM.

If you love ECM's catalog of minimalist jazz recordings, add this one to the list. As a fan of Tord Gustavsen, Jon Hassell and Nik Bartsch, the reviews led me to purchase this one, and it's the newest one to find itself seated almost permanently in the disc player. Don't let the slow textures fool you, the music is complex and intricately composed.

I had not heard of this guitarist before but I like many on the ECM label. I am really enjoying this CD. Fans of Steve Tibbetts or Terje Rypdal would like it.

I'm a big fan of Eivind Aarset's other albums, in particular "Sonic Codex", "Live Extracts" and "Light Extracts". This release is MUCH more minimalist and darkly ambient than those previous releases...I gave it a listen and it's just not my cup of tea. Only a few pieces, such as "Homage to Greene" and "The Whispering Forest" have a resemblance to mellower songs of previous recordings. If you're expecting a similar style to his past recordings, you won't find that here. (I can, however, appreciate that he's trying something pretty different..."The Beauty of Decay" reminds me of some earlier Jon Hassell works)

I'm glad it took undoubted skill as both a player & a computer programmer to make this music but as I generally have no trouble sleeping, I'm not glad I paid good money for it. Broodingly ambient & somewhat similar (but IMHO inferior) to the music of Jon Hassell, the occasional complexity in the programming cannot disguise what is basically just airy, manufactured meanderings without a pulse.
