Editorial Reviews

Best known as the writer of From A Distance (winning the Grammy for Song Of The Year in 1990), Gold has been writing and performing since the '70s, often winning accolades for her heartfelt performances of her deeply personal songs. She has won legions of fans among the country's best singers, leading to covers of her songs by Bette Midler, Nanci Griffith, Judy Collins, Kathy Mattea, Andrea Marcovicci, Patti Lupone, and many others.

In addition to her success as a writer, Gold also toured the country and recorded a CD as a member of The Bitchin' Babes, with Christine Lavin, Sally Fingerett, and Megan McDonough. She has also played numerous solo shows, including a weekly club engagement at the popular New York City nightspot Eighty-Eights.

Dream Loud is a 12-cut collection of studio recordings that Gold has created en route to placing her songs with some of the country's best pop singers. The album includes her original studio version of From A Distance and complete lyrics and notes about each song. Originally from Philadelphia, Gold attended Temple University in the mid-'70s then moved to New York in 1978 to pursue her dream of being a songwriter. Though she immediately caught the attention of her peers and observers of the local scene, it wasn't until Bette Midler had a megahit with From A Distance that her career as a songwriter was solidly established.

There aren't many songwriters better than Julie Gold. As a resulting bonus, this album is congruent from start to finish. This album is has a very uplifting message. I'm buying extra copies for people who i know who are sick and dying, that's the power of the message this album conveys. I understand from the liner notes, basically this is a greatest hits album. I orginally heard this artist on Mountain Stage.

What an amazing album, and what an amazing performer! While Julie Gold may not be an operatic diva, she sings with more soul and conviction than anyone I've ever heard. The title song, "Dream Loud," helped get me through a terribly difficult period of my life. I listened to it every day and it was cathartic. Also noteworthy is "Welcome to Paradise," a song so simple and beautiful it can't help but bring a tear to your eye. This is an album you must listen to not just with your ears but with your heart as well. A must.

I believe this is the first appearance (1998) on a CD of "From a Distance" (also recorded by Nanci Griffith, and of course by Bette Midler, for whom it became a mega-hit. It also became a sort of mordant anthem for US troops in Iraq - "God is watching us/ from a distance..." I loved this song when I firs heard it (perhaps a little earlier, from her NY days with Fast Folk?), anyway, and continue to love it. There are, however, another 11 beautiful songs on this CD - when has Julie Gold ever written anything but a beautiful song - Bette Midler or not!? (You can tell I'm a Julie Gold fan; in any case, as not a songwriter, I make a policy of not reviewing CD's that I do not like - I'm not an investigative critic!) I see that previous reviewers on Amazon find, for example, the title cut, "Dream Loud," and "Welcome to Paradise (For Randy" inspiring songs that help them get through the day. I find "Heaven" ( a love song to Randy...?) very beautiful too, and of course, "The Language of Love." Her "Goodnight, New York" (second last song on this CD) seems to me could be linked to her Fast Folk days; at any rate, it immediately precedes her sweet version of "From a Distance," to me a perfect excuse to put the CD on constant-play and drift with it down the highway. No? Yes. "Dream Loud" - I will.

Note that this is a collection of song demos. What does this mean? A demo is the song stripped down to its basics. In this case, it is Julie singing the lyric, and someone (her?) accompaning on piano. Sometimes there are background harmonies. Very little production. Sparse.
Still, it is refreshing to hear the naked song, sung by the composer, as she intended it.
