Book Description

January 2000
No writer can rival the sheer storytelling power of New York Times bestselling author Virginia Henley, whose many books have earned a place on her readers' shelves and in their hearts.  Now, in her hardcover debut, she brings us the tale of a man whose need for vengeance rules his heart and the woman who may prove to be his most effective weapon of revenge, or the instrument of his destruction.

After five long years on a prison ship, Sean O'Toole, Earl of Kildare, makes his escape in order to exact his plan of revenge upon the Englishman who killed his brother and framed Sean for the crime.  While imprisoned, Sean honed his body to rock-hard perfection, steeled his will against all sentiment, and filled his mind with thoughts of retribution against the man he had hated for years.  But at night his dreams were filled with memories of his enemy's daughter--the half-Irish, half-English Emerald, whose fiery beauty had beguiled him when they met, and whose bold and fearless spirit he had never forgotten.

His memories of Emerald are not enough to prevent Sean from going through with his plan to use her as a pawn in his quest for vengeance.  His scheme: to kidnap Emerald and bring her to his home, where he will keep her long enough to sully her reputation and bring disgrace upon her family.  Sean is shocked when, instead of the defiant temptress he once knew, the memory of whom kept him alive for five long years, he finds his quarry is now a timid, fearful woman afraid of her own shadow.  Has she too become a victim of her father's corruption?  Determined to go through with his plans, he steals Emerald away to his family's estate, where he slowly gains her trust--only to betray her with his lies.

Locked in prisons of their own making, Emerald and Sean must find a way to break free of their bonds, or risk losing themselves--and each other--forever.

Amazon.com Review

Readers who pick up this Virginia Henley who are simply looking for a bawdy read may be disappointed. This is an artfully crafted, beautifully written revenge romance that offers the complexity of all human relationships: political, espousal, and familial. On second thought, maybe they won't be disappointed as Virginia's books never fail to titillate and this one certainly achieves that--at the very least. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

From Library Journal

Another in this romance author's best-selling tradition, full of the obligatory scandals, violent earls, and headstrong beauties.

More About the Author

New York Times best-seller Virginia Henley is the author of 26 lush and lusty historical romances and 5 short stories. Her books are published in 16 languages around the world. She is the recipient of a dozen awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award from Romantic Times, A Maggie Award for Excellence from the Georgia Romance Writers, and a Waldenbook Award for top-selling long historical for 1994.

The St. Petersburg Times calls Henley "The Queen of Steamy Romance."

Kathe Robin, RT Book Reviews says: "Henley's gift for bringing remarkable women to life in colorful, turbulent times is what turns her romances into keepers. Henley heats up the pages with her love scenes, and her skill at portraying actual historical personages with humanity while maintaining historical accuracy wins our minds. Henley knows what historical romance is all about and always gives the readers what they want."

Henley says: "My hero is always dark, dominant and dangerous. Then I create a woman who is a match for him...or more than a match!
Men come up to me at conferences and thank me for writing my books. One man said, "I don't read them, but I always know when my wife is reading a Henley!"

My next book The Dark Earl goes on sale September 6 and is the third in the series following The Decadent Duke, and The Irish Duke.

I have just turned two of my backlist books into Kindle ebooks. Wild Hearts and Bold Conquest are historical romances. My novella Hot As Fire, also available on Kindle, is my only contemporary. I have a short story up on Kindle called Letter of Love that is FREE.

Next month I will be offering a new ebook that is a Southern family saga.
MASTER OF PARADISE tells the story of Nicholas Peacock who is disinherited of his title and wealth in England. He sails to Charleston, South Carolina, and starts a cotton plantation just before the Civil War disrupts everyone's life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dream Lover, June 3, 2003

For Virginia Henley, these love scenes are a little tame. However, those same scenes may be too descriptive or unconventional for readers who aren't used to her style. I like the way the love story started. I think they both must have fallen in love at first sight. My main wish is that Sean had kidnapped Emerald before her wedding. I know her marriage was an unhappy one that had nothing to do with love, but this book would have been just as good without the adultery aspect. The characters were likeable. Though some very sad events occur, it's a very good book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Keep away!!, September 16, 1999

Unless you want to be totally turn off by Henley's books, keep away from this one. This was the book that made me turn to other writers. It was a great disappointment, especially after reading 'Tempted' and other better ones. I am still wondering if i should read any more Henley books. This book is too depressing for words!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heart wrenching tale with equal amounts of sorrow and joy, November 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dream Lover (Paperback)
This truly is by far the BEST BOOK Virginia Henley has written. In her other novels (which i truly love) the hero is so easy to fall in love with. However, in this novel it is harder to love the hero-Sean and so very easy to love Emerald- Clearly she grows and matures into a woman throughout the course of this novel. When I think of Amber and Joseph and Shamus and Kathleen- I cry. Although the novel ends beautifully with Sean and Emerald together- My heart is still broken over the many lost loves. I could write forever about this book and I am undone by the emotions, spirituality, actions, and sexuality of Sean Emerald Amber Joseph Kathleen and Shamus. This novel is different from your others because the woman is not a shy coy maiden who has to be coaxed into love. Emerald's heart overflows with unrestrained love and passion while Sean keeps a part of himself locked away and later realizes his eternal love for Emerald
