If you grew up in the area of Woodward Avenue in the '60's, you will love this book. I did, and I do.

Great book for anyone who went to school in the 1950s and 1960s and went to drive in resturants. This book is especially wonderful for those that love the Dream Cruse in Royal Oak, Mi to Birmingham, Mi. This book brings together a story of our time in the 1960s when the girls would cruise to meet the guys and the guys would cruise to meet the girls and show off their cars to current Dream Cruise events. It is funny, sad, good and will bring back great memories. Very well written!

With lots of information about an annual classic car event in Detroit, "Dream Machines" entices our interest with a love story shadowed by a 50 year old grudge match. Male grandparents of the betrothed are vintage baby boomers who used to race their hopped up hot rods on Woodward Avenue in Detroit. Their history included a race to date a beautiful girl which ended with a rancorous no-win fiasco. After 50 years of avoiding contact, now their grandkids have brought them face to face to renew old angers. You don't have to be male to appreciate the well put together story, with surprises and clever devices to catch your interest, even though classic cars may be the main character. Certainly boomers who remember with reverence drive ins with rollerskating waitresses, and endless streams of cool cars showing off on Friday nights can relate. But car buffs of all ages can appreciate the many details about the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise, bringing the old cars up to speed, and the amusing snarky competition of the two gramps (I can just see Robert DeNiro as one of them in the movie version).Fun to know the author grew up just blocks away and was definitely a part of the times.
