Clifford Norgate's reading allows listeners to visit the city of Pompeii as Cy and his Dream Master travel in time to warn the citizens of impending doom. Because Cy's travels take place as a part of his dream life, he must learn to construct his dreams so that they unfold in an orderly, structured manner. In describing this process, listeners are introduced to the elements of creative writing. The Dream Master's dream cloak carries them to their great adventures, but he continually warns Cy that he must be careful about where his dreams take him and how they involve others. When Cy makes friends with some kids his own age who are living in Pompeii during the days of the great volcanic eruption, he must learn how to help them without changing the outcome of history. Clifford Norgate is splendid, particularly, as the Dream Master; listeners cringe right along with Cy when he is displeased. There are many mini-lessons (on history, science, grammar) as the young audience is caught up in the tale. Finally, the concepts of compassion and friendship are well handled as Cy returns to present-day England, and the story is brought to a fantastic conclusion.
