Santa Claus, almost complete., January 3, 2002
This review is from: Dream of Santa: Haddon Sundblom's Advertising Paintings for Christmas, 1932-1964 (Hardcover)
It didn't take the world long, in the thirties, to accept that the man in the Christmas Coke ads was Santa and this delightful book displays Haddon Sundblom's paintings over thirty-three years. If you see a tall, thin man dressed in red and carrying a sack of toys the chances are that it was painted before 1933. Sundblom wisely thought a fat jovial looking guy had more credability than a thin one.
Wonderful though this book is I wish the authors had gone the extra mile and made it a comprehensive study of his Santa paintings, his work for the years 1941, 1957 and 1963 are missing. The text refers to alternative paintings created in some years to fit the various media used (billboards, magazines ads and retail unit cutout figures etc) some of these paintings are shown but not all. Most of the paintings are shown without advertising copy, I would like to see how the copy or headlines were used, a small reproduction would have been useful. They could have reproduced the back cover of the The National Geographic which Coke used every December for a Sundblom Santa ad.
A lovely book but I am disappointed that the full potential of the subject was not realised. Perhaps a better book is
Coca-Cola Collectible Santas: Official Coca-Cola Collectors Series because it covers Coke Santas in all sorts of marketing forms. Nicely designed, too considering it's for the collectors market.

Every Santa loves a Coke., February 2, 2001
This review is from: Dream of Santa: Haddon Sundblom's Advertising Paintings for Christmas, 1932-1964 (Hardcover)
I've been searching for years, for a book about Haddon Sundblom's Santa's. The people who really should buy this book are art lovers, who think that Victorian/Edwardian Santa's were the best. I would rate Sundblom's Santa's with the masters of long ago, and personally think he was a genius of OUR time. The text against each large colourful picture is short, and very informative. The only reason I have'nt given it all 5 stars,is because it does'nt have all the Santa's Sundblom painted. I do hope there will be another volume containing all the missing paintings.
Best wishes, Ray. P.S.It's Christmas every day in my house!

Fine Book: Four & one half stars, July 2, 2011

Dream of Santa: Haddon Sundblom's Advertising Paintings for Christmas, 1932-1964
I have copies of several Santa books containing some of the works of Haddon Sundblom and I own a copy of Dream of Santa in mint condition which I bought here on Amazon, I believe, several years ago.
There are prints of Sundblom's other works; magazine and book illustrations, other advertising illustrations in a variety of books. Seven of his paintings appear in a larger format volume called, Coca Cola Girls by Chris Beyer and there are a few in Illustrators' of America, another large format book. There is also The Night Before Christmas and a smaller book; Clement C., Moore's Twas the Night Before Christmas with art by Sundblom and another artist. Unfortunately, however, as yet, no one has produced a comprehensive book of all of his art. I hope soon that someone does.
The Dream of Santa contains some of the Santa Claus illustrations originally done for Coca Cola Company by "Sunny" as his friends and colleagues called him. Though not a large book most of the reproductions have clear, high resolution but not as brilliant as those of the smaller book Clement C. Moore's, Twas the Night Before Christmas or the slightly larger book, The Night Before Christmas by PIL Publications and Coca Cola, with excellent and larger reproductions of superb resolution, and all available here on Amazon from time to time.
Sunny had a studio a few blocks from where the American Academy of Art was located for many years near Wabash and Adam's in the Loop in Chicago. Back in the 1950's and 1960's the AAA had a policy of displaying the best art of the month on its bulletin boards in the lobby and Sundblom would stop by now and then to visit his friend, painting Instructor, Bill Mosby, and also on the recommendation of figure and anatomy, Professor's Mosby, Sala and Vandenbrock, would invite those students whose figure drawings or paintings from live models were on display, to visit his studio. I was lucky enough to have been frequently exhibited thereon, and so was honored to visit and watch Sundblom paint and pitch in cleaning brushes, palate knives, changing turpentine, etc. and learned a great deal watching Sundblom paint. I have never seen anyone work as fast. At times his brush hand was almost a blur, as he appeared to slap the paint in what seemed to be reckless abandon, and yet, always with perfect color, value, shape and placement.
Out of gratitude for the inspiration his work provided, I did a Santa Painting, doing the best imitation I could muster of his style. There is a copy of on my website which I call, A Tribute to Haddon Sundblom. His brush work and vibrant colors are among the best of any illustrator, ever. I give Dream of Santa: Haddon Sundblom's Advertising Paintings for Christmas, 4.5 stars.
He was then, and remains now, one of my favorite painter/illustrators. Had he opted for "Fine Art" as well, as many illustrators do today, he would be considered among the best in that genre as well.
This and the others above I mention would be good additions to the reference or collection of any artist or enthusiast.
I might also suggest looking over The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Tom Browning, which is excellent and in a fine painterly style as well.
