Editorial Reviews

From the image of a small boy entranced by his mother's GI Escort, yet still hoping for the return of a father 'missing in action', to the portrait of an adult writer trying to piece together a defining image of his late father, these outstanding stories conjure up with sharp intensity the memories and events that make a man. These powerfully vivid stories range over more than a century of Australian life, from green tropical lushness to 'blacksoil country', from scrub and outback to city streets - evoking dark shadows beneath a bright sun, and lives shaped by the ghosts of history and the rhythms of unruly nature.

From the Back Cover

"Outstanding...Malouf at his absolute best." — The Observer

"Maloufs stories are like riptides...his first few lines pool up to readers with calm ease and grace before hurling them headlong into the dark heart of his vision." — National Post

"One and all, these masterful stories are such stuff as dreams are made of." — Kirkus Reviews

"In this collection&the dreamlike, almost metaphysical qualities of the land are simply part of the overwhelming strangeness." — The Toronto Star --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This is a book I would like to erase from my memory. It's pure mediocrity astounds me. The stories are obviously supposed to be deep and emotional and moving *tear* but they fail abysmally. They are, to a man, a flop. Pointless, boring, inane.
