Susannah's style is usually described as jazz/pop, but I don't really care what category her music is, only that I love her bluesy voice, and her style, so much so that I've bought all sixteen available original albums. Looking at reviews of various Susannah albums, it's clear that not everybody shares my enthusiasm, so you must make up your own mind.

I don't have a particular favorite among Susannah's albums - they are all excellent, including this one. Susannah mostly recorded songs of the Great American Songbook (sometimes the obvious songs, but also some very obscure songs), though she occasionally recorded songs of more recent origin.

On this album, you will find many songs that are typical of Susannah's repertoire, including two Cole Porter songs (At long last love and I get a kick out of you), Bewitched, All of me and the title song from the pen of Johnny Mercer.

Perhaps the least expected song here is Paul Simon's Train in the distance. This first appeared on his Hearts and bones album, but later appeared on Negotiations and love songs, a compilation which takes it's title from a phrase in the song. I haven't heard Paul's version recently, but the song certainly suits Susannah.

This is a wonderful album from a lady who's personal life was clearly less successful than her music, as she committed suicide. So, there will be nothing new from Susannah to look forward to, but she left a wonderful legacy for us all to enjoy.

Susannah McCorkle is a literate singer with great style. She had a gift which she gave generously. I'm so sorry I never saw her. This CD is a great introduction to her music. Highly recommended.
