I remember the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Tommy Newsom was the substitute bandleader. Carson would razz him constantly as Mr. Excitement which was quite funny.
He was also a great musician and superb arranger. Listen to this CD with Chuck Redd and Joe Byrd from Charlie Byrd's group. It is a delight. There is also guitarist Howard Alden who could pass as an electric version of Charlie Byrd. The combination of Newsom's languid tenor and Redd's vibes is delightful. Howard Alden is incredible melodic and comps incredibly well. Joe Byrd has long been a favorite bassist of mine, you listen to him, you feel him without realizing it. What a group. |
