5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth and soothing, March 18, 2000
By
Karl E. Balsara (Columbia, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dream Walk (Audio CD)
This album is awesome. I own 7 of Keiko Matsui's albums and this one is far and away my favorite. It is smooth and soothing all the way through, there are no vocals anywhere, and unlike some other albums, this one just gets better with every listen. Traditional Japaneese influences have featured largely in Keiko's music but with this album, she takes it to a whole new level. It is an almost new age feel that carries you through rolling tracks like Dream Walk, Presence of the Moon, and Tribal Boat. Bridge Over the Stars and A Cat on a Chimney maintain the jazz feeling while Mask and Valley simply knock you head over heels with their power. If you are a new fan of Keiko Matsui's music or contempory jazz in general, you should own this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once again dreamy magical music, November 23, 2003
This review is from: Dream Walk (Audio CD)
There is something haunting, mystical, mysterious, and yet up front and straight out about Keiko Matsui's music. She is a constant dicotomy, which is enchanting and inspiring all at the same time.

Dream Walk is as wonderful as the rest of her albums. The songs run the gamut of emotion and themes from bubbling cheery to haunting whispers of a dark night's mist rising.

Add this to your collection of Keiko if you are a fan. If you aren't a fan, you might want to start with Shaphire or her Live Album to get a well-rounded taste of the magic. This album is great for easy listening, inspiring listening, and eating dinner or just relaxing with a good book. She's done wonders again!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite, May 14, 2005
This review is from: Dream Walk (Audio CD)
This is an excellent album--very relaxing and uplifting. Very different from the general run of "stuff" you hear nowdays.

I've called this my "favorite album I do not own". I've checked it out from the library for years because I could not find it for sale. Its time I had it. Thanks!! : )

5.0 out of 5 stars BRIDGE OVER THE STARS!, October 11, 1999
This review is from: Dream Walk (Audio CD)
Unbelieveable tune from DREAM WALK. I have been playing piano 47 years and I have fallen in love with the way this woman plays.I happen to be a home theater designer in California and I have a full-fledged Dolby Digitalreference system here in my studio; I can hardly wait for the CD to get to me (I just heard it off FM KWAV (THE WAVE) and the price is worth it for BRIDGE OVER THE STARS alone. The engineering is perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best I've heard, March 28, 2001

This was my first Keiko Matsui CD. I have since purchased two more because I loved this one so much. I was disappointed in the other two. This is a must have for any new age/jazz collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars May be the best, March 29, 2000

This CD and "Full Moon and the Shrine" are my favorites by Keiko. I am more partial to the latter, but it is a close call. As I wrote in my review of "Full Moon", this is one of the 1st four Keiko CDs I recommend to someone just getting started on her music (her Live and Collection CDs are the others). However, I own all 12 of her CDs and I enjoy listening to every one of them. Someone unwilling to stray from more traditional jazz, classical, or pop sounds may not like her music. It combines all of these styles and includes the sound of Japanese music. This blend, however, can be very appealing and seems to me to be worth experiencing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A record to die for (R2D4), May 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dream Walk (Audio CD)
Is it jazz or new age? Who cares! This mix of Keiko Matsui on piano and keyboards, Paul Taylor playing a very Kenny G like sax, Derek Nakamoto on bass, sequencer, and synths combined with vocals by Molly Passutti, and traditional instruments played by husband Kazu Matsi, has snap, sparkle, and soul. This disk went into the CD player in my he-man stereo rig and didn't come out again for over a month. When it did, it went into the CD player in the car. No flaws, no duds, when the album is over, you're disappointed that it has to end. Have no fear, Saphire blends, and is every bit as good, if not better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazz that touches the soul., November 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dream Walk (Audio CD)
Not many Jazz albums have brought me to tears, but Kieko Matsui's Dream Walk has. In a rare combination of thoughtful composition, memorable tunes and subtle production, Keiko has presented her fans with an emotional tour de force that even Jazz detesters can't help but love.

While the unit is pure Keiko, she doesn't insist on being center stage. She prefers to present her music in carefully crafted arrangements that showcase an intricate dialog between various instruments. When she does turn the spotlight on herself, she plays with restraint and a remarkable feel for the poinient.

In a Jazz world where technical style oft wins out over musical substance, Dream Walk is a refreshing and thought provoking respite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful ..., January 28, 2004

I got this album from a friend. I knew nothing about Keido Matsui before but this album made me an instant fan. This may not be everybody's cup of tea but I like classic and smooth jazz, classical, instrumental (Vangelis, Mehdi ... ), and Asian pop music, so you get the idea, no?

Bravo Keiko!

5.0 out of 5 stars Keiko Matsui - Her music is a dream, October 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Dream Walk (Audio CD)
It does not do justice to describe music with words alone.
Moving, passionate, dreamy, ethereal, rhythmic...
My favorite track, and one of my all time favorite musical pieces is "Bridge Over the Stars"... but the entire album is exceptional.
Her other albums are also outstanding. Try "Sapphire" and "Whisper...".
