One of the clearest writings on Zen,

Zen teaching by definition is often very difficult to understand. Some teachers are better at explaining the unexplainable than others. Muso and this translation are much easier to read than most and the small volume is full of pointers to the fundamental. If you have been frustrated by reading some Zen books and thought that something must have been missed in the translation or that the writing was just so much nonsense, try this book. You still may need some help from another to help with some of the passages, but careful study of the text will reveal everything you need to know on your journey to where your already are.

Cleary is one of the important translators of our time,
without question. His work and the texts he selects are very
helpful to people working with attention and sensation. Several of
his translations are of difficult texts (Dogen comes to mind)
but this one is very intense, brief, clear and alive.
