4.0 out of 5 stars Will She Make It?, May 18, 2001
By
The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: DreamCity (Paperback)
Dream City by Sibylla Nash is a novel that truly identifies with its title. Adrianna Whittaker's story of trying to become an actress in Tinsel Town is told through her daily entries in her diary. Adrianna's diary becomes her venting, frustrations, disappointments, good news, and saddened voice of her trials and tribulations of struggling in the artistic world of acting. Her desire to become an actress is a dream that she is determined to accomplish. She reveals herself as being eager, determined, stubborn, and at times selfish.

Adrianna's daily entries include her ongoing love/hate relationship with her mother and her sister, Anita. It also includes various jobs she has to take in order to survive financially plus the times she has to break down and borrow money from her mother and friends. Her auditions, callbacks, and disappointments are the ongoing sagas of Adrianna's determination to reach her dream of being an actress.

Although her friends are very supportive of her, they have issues as she soon learns when one of them succumbs to drugs and dies. She comes close to a nervous breakdown when a family member, who is her number one supporter, is tragically killed. Adrianna's relationships are additional sagas in which she first believes that Collin, a grad student, is her long awaited soulmate.

Yet, the unthinkable happens and she's drawn toward Simon, an established member of Tinsel Town, who happens to be white. In spite of his color, he awakens feelings Adrianna never knew she had and she's faced making decisions that help her come to terms with her goals.

Adrianna's visit to her grandmother, Nana, becomes the highlight that helps her identify self and her dreams of becoming an actress.

The flow of the novel was good. It was very realistic and desriptive of the goings on of Hollywood and the world of wanna-be actors and actresses. Ms. Nash's Dream City is a nice revealing novel of one person's struggle to make it in Hollywood through the words of her diary. I encourage you to read the book to find out if she does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Debut!, February 8, 2001
By
Nashon Hornsby (West Orange, New Jersey United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: DreamCity (Paperback)
Ms. Nash has introduced the reader to the intimate life of Adrianna Whittaker, a struggling actress who faces issues that are painfully real. Among the issues that she faces are: how to stay afloat financially while following her dreams of becoming a star; how to maintain a stable relationship built on trust after one's heart has been betrayed; and how to face discrimination without becoming disenchanted or bitter? All of these issues are masterfully dealt with by this fresh[wo]man writer. I applaud Ms. Nash for her excellent work. I look forward to reading her sophomore publication.

This review is from: DreamCity (Paperback)
If you world is surrounded by to much drama and you want to escape to someone else's life than DreamCity is the book for you! Adrianna Whittaker's world is self-centered, fun, sexy, selfish, painful, up, down and all around. Her troubles are real, ridiculos, and heartwarming all at the same time. Reading her diary every day makes her extremely real to me. I wonder if I'm standing next to her on the street everyday. Sibylla Nash has done a great job in bringing her to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hollywood Shuffle, September 12, 2000
By
This review is from: DreamCity (Paperback)
I work in Hollywood and thought the observations of some of the players (actuals and wannabes) were quite on target. Loved the whole Genx X angst. It's something about reading a book in diary format that makes you feel like you're getting the real skinny on things. In DreamCity, you feel like you're peeking over Adrianna's shoulder.

4.0 out of 5 stars Realistic View of Life In The City of Angels!, October 20, 2001
This review is from: DreamCity (Paperback)
If you enjoy reading books that are written in a diary/journal format then look no further than DreamCity by first-time novelist Sibylla Nash. Nash takes us into the year in the life of Adrianna Whittaker as she experiences one of the toughest years of her life. Adrianna has moved to Los Angeles to make a go as a Hollywood star. Unfortunately, its not working out as quickly or as successfully as she envisioned. To top it off...she has drama going on all around her. She deals with a drug overdose, a man-stealing sister and an interracial relationship to boot. As we journey with Adrianna we realize that she doesn't always have the "perfect" answer for every issue but she does experience growth along the way in this journey called life. While DreamCity is a fictional read often times it read like non-fiction; I must admit that after reading about Adrianna's woes my life didn't seem so bad after all.

DreamCity is a well-written coming of age story. Check out DreamCity by Sibylla Nash and escape to a different world with Adrianna Whittaker.

I just got finish reading DreamCity and couldn't help but jump online to write and talk about Adrianna. I wish the author had a DreamCity bookclub that I could join.

DreamCity will have you talking back to the book. You will hate, love, feel sorry and then hope for the best for the self-involved Adrianna and her friends.

This is a winner. If anyone have any info on a bookclub or the author please feel free to email me at maniluv@aol.com
