Scared Shrekless
Scared Shrekless
is a Halloween special that skews more adult in humor, offering viewers three short, "scary" stories as told by Gingy, Donkey, Puss in Boots, and Shrek. On Halloween night, Shrek and friends hold a contest of wits to find the King of Halloween--the one who is the bravest and can survive the longest in Lord Farquaad's abandoned castle. The final story, which will be lost on younger audiences, parodies the 1973 film The Exorcist, complete with head-spinning and projectile vomiting. This movie also comes with several special features, the most exciting of which is a parody of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video. In the styling of a typical end-of-a-Shrek-movie musical number, Donkey, Fiona, Puss in Boots, and company perform an enjoyable homage to the King of Pop. Scared Shrekless has its moments but it does lack some of the wit that made the original Shrek movies so great. Overall, this movie is amusing but is best suited for an older audience. --Alex Westrom

Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space
Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space is short, smart, and entertaining. While physical humor and an easy-to-follow plot line will keep kids laughing, timely quotes from iconic movies like Apocalypse Now and Scarface will keep adult viewers smiling. This Halloween flick opens in Modesto, California, where evil aliens have turned all of the town's pumpkins into mutant, candy-craving jack-o'-lanterns who want to destroy the world. Susan (Reese Witherspoon), B.O.B. (Seth Rogen), the Missing Link (Will Arnett), and Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (Hugh Laurie), are dispatched by the US government to save the town from the evil alien scheme and crush the mutant pumpkins before it's too late. With an all-star cast, this movie stays true to the form and the styling of the original Monsters vs. Aliens movie and is sure to be a family favorite. --Alex Westrom

Product Description

Scared Shrekless
Halloween is Shrek’s favorite holiday – but instead of the usual tricks or treats, Shrek ups the ante and challenges the gang to spend the night telling scary stories.  The last one to be scared Shrekless wins.   Scared Shrekless features the voices of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas. The DVD includes a Shrek-ed out parody of Michael Jackson’s epic music video “Thriller.”

Monsters Vs. Aliens: Pumpkins From Outer Space
Susan, B.O.B., The Missing Link, and Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D., are back as special operatives dispatched to investigate a mysterious alien presence on Halloween. As the night unravels the innocent-looking pumpkins are revealed for what they really are – mutant aliens! Luckily the monsters are there to smash the mutants’ wicked scheme to take over Earth.

My kids loved the shows and are very enjoyable to watch as adults.

Fun for the little ones, it is still engaging to older audiences with sly references to Gremlins, Psycho, Halloween and other genre classics and in-jokes.

Shrek is always a fun time and my children always think he's hilarious.

I guess when it comes to holiday programming, you could say that I'm fairly old fashioned. The classics that I grew up with when there weren't as many television options became yearly traditions--by familiarity, if not always quality. Today, with hundreds of stations to select from, kids can be more choosy. And yet, I'm still rarely blown away by the options presented. When Dreamworks, therefore, adopted two of its film franchises into new Halloween spectaculars--I was a bit skeptical. The original "Shrek" was one of my all time beloved movies although the series was beginning to show wear, while "Monsters vs Aliens" may have had its moments but it wasn't a particular favorite of mine. I was, therefore, pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed these two brief specials. "Scared Shrekless" and "Monsters vs Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space" can be purchased individually, but certainly qualify as a better deal in a combination pack if you want both. Note: These aired as 30 minutes specials with commercials--so approximate running times are about 22 minutes each if that makes a difference in your buying choice.

In "Monsters vs Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space," Susan (Reese Witherspoon) and her team of wacky cohorts are now government operatives. Near Halloween, an alien presence is detected in Susan's hometown and the crew is dispatched. While everything appears calm, soon innocent jack-o-lanterns are revealed to be nefarious aliens with a cunning plot to take over the world. Fast and funny, with plenty of gourd guts, this showdown is well orchestrated and gives every member of the team a chance to shine. The addition of Susan's family adds some amusement--obviously, their little girl isn't so little anymore.

I DVR both of these programs when they came out and haved them locked in. I have been surprised that it has taken so long to get Monsters vs. Aliens on DVD as it was shown 2 years ago. Shrek was released last year so not as long of a wait, although disappointing that Eddie Murphy did not play the part of Donkey the voice is very close. My kids loved the shows and are very enjoyable to watch as adults. I'll be glad to be able to remove these from my DVR.

Dreamworks generally doesn't make bad cartoons as far as I can tell. The first Shrek cartoon not to have Eddy Murphy play Donkey, the guy they got to replace him sounded exactly like him. The Monsters Vs. Aliens short picked up right where the movie left off.

Both cartoons were the high quality fair I've come to expect from Dreamworks and well worth buying.
