At first glance, this lock appears a little cheap. However, it does function nicely. We have had no problems with it whatsoever. However, there are 2 improvements that I think could be built into the lock. First, like a tape measure, the cable retracts into the lock when it is not being used. While clever and handy, this feature is also not very well engineered. The retracting mechanism seems clanky to me, and I won't be surprised when it one day will not retract any longer. Second, the cable release button should lock when the cable is locked, and it does not. In other words, if you want to use this lock with less than all of the cable pulled out, you cannot do it. Since the cable release button works when the combination is scrambled, you can simply push the button and pull out the rest of the cable. It would be nice if they had designed this button to lock when the combination is scrambled. Then, you could use any length of cable you wish.

This "child-proof" lock is the only one that I've found that will fit through the decorative handles on a Chinese-inspired cabinet I own. That's what earned it the second star. That said, the cable winding mechanism doesn't lock, so it will extend even when the end of the cable has been inserted into the lock. The combination lock is only effective at keeping the end of the cable in the body of the lock, nothing is stopping my child from extending the cable by yanking on the lock except his own initiative, and nothing will stop him from reaching inside the cabinet and pulling out the contents once he figures this out.

This cable lock is great for keeping little ones out of your cabinets We used this on our island where we had 2 adjacent doors. The cable just about fits. I wish it was a tad bit longer, but this length keeps the doors shut tight. The combination lock is also a great feature. As soon as my little one saw those black buttons she immediately started pushing on them. I will be ordering more of these to secure additional cabinet doors.

my houdini child has manage to escape and open every child saftey device on the market with the exception of this lock! I used this on all of my cabinets and even my refridgerator! My child would open the fridge at all hours of the night leaving the door open and spoiling so much food! I purchased 6 locks and they have all worked incrediblely well despite its cheap feel and appearance. 2 yrs later only one lock has broken and I am purchasing this same lock again!

We own two of these and they are very effective. You need to be precise with the length of silver cord that you allow so there is no slack in the cord before you lock it up. With a little practice, they work great. Ours are installed on some cabinet handles that are U-shaped and these keep them held together tightly. One is on the pancake griddle and mixer cabinet, which we use every Saturday, so it gets a lot of use and is holding up like new. They would get 5 stars if the price was a bit cheaper.

Our toddler is smart, smart, smart, and he has figured out all the other cabinet locks. This is the only one that has him foiled. Unless he figures out the combination, our cupboards are protected (at least the ones with the double doors). I only wish there was a way to pull out the cable, lock it in and then shorten it. The way it works now, you have a lot of trial and error the first time you use it in order to find the right length. The upside is, you only have to do that once. We watch our toddler yank and yank and yank to try to get the doors open, and these hold firm.

My 9 and 7 year olds like to sneak treats from our top cabinet. The regular child locks don't work anymore. These things are awesome! And if you accidentally leave the combination set, you can reset the combination easily. Love em!

The main problem I have with this lock is that the cable doesn't retract once the lock is engaged. That means that you have to measure it precisely and then carefully insert the cable to lock it--and if you've gotten a tight fit (which is what I want on my good cabinets) it's very hard to get your fingers in there and close it. It also didn't fit a cabinet with mushroom-styles handles in my kitchen--it just didn't retract small enough. It's a great idea but it's just really hard to close if you want a tight fit.

We bought this to lock up our alcohol in our bar cabinets from our baby. I wanted something what would work as he grew up. The combo works great, my only complaint would be that it is a little hard to latch because the cable retraction does not work once it is latched. So you have to get the tension and size right before latching. Maybe I am doing something wrong but I could not figure out another way.

These are worth the extra money. I bought the cheaper, plastic, slide style locks and my baby was able to remove them at around 14 months. This lock is sturdier, the cable retracts like a tape measure so you can adjust it to fit the handles tightly, and you can program a code when the baby is smart enought to push the release button and open the lock.
