2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry this is not one of Ian's best, February 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dreamcatcher (Audio CD)
Ian Gillan has made a number of fine records over the years, but this is not one of them. The production is terrible and all the songs have the same sterile sound. Sound problems aside, most of the songs just aren't that good. I have been really disappointed with this one.

Nevertheless, there are still a few keepers. "Country Mile" is really nice. "Chandra's Coriander" is interesting. "That's Why God is Singing the Blues" is typically enjoyable Gillan humor/philosophy, and the cover of "Any Way You Want Me" is quite entertaining.

Also, be warned that this is not one of Gillan's hard rock albums. It's not exactly soft either, but the sound is far removed from the heavy metal of a record like "Glory Road".

4.0 out of 5 stars INTELIGGENT ALBUM WRITTEN BY A GREAT MUSICIAN, November 8, 2001
This review is from: Dreamcatcher (Audio CD)
This album by Gillan is about music, not formulas, not rotules like "rock", "jazz" or whatever. Gillan smartly used his time outside Purple commitments to record some different stuff. That was not the case in the MR. UNIVERSE / GLORY ROAD / FUTURE SHOCK days, when he had not Purple to release his full rockers, and so did it with his own band. No. Now, with Purple going strong and strong with Steve Morse on board, there was no need for Gillan release and old-fashioned rocking album. If he did that, I would be dissapointed. DREAMCATCHER is interesting since the first page of the booklet, when Gillan talks about the recent passing away of his father. The songs are well crafted and emotional; the production is simple. I just don't know if all drums and bas are electronic, because the credits only contain Gillan and his long time mate Steve Morris on guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm..., April 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Dreamcatcher (Audio CD)
To any avid follower of Ian Gillan's musical career, it should be obvious that each album is unique, fresh and unpredictable. Such is the "Dreamcatcher", a set of simple, down to earth melodic tunes that Gillan recorded in 1998. Given the fact that Ian constantly updated and switched his musical genre from hard-core rock'n'roll to funky jazz, the simplicity of "Dreamcatcher" will come as a no surprise. What is fantastic about the album is that Gillan is capable of producing such a diverse mixture of excellent songs, from rhythm and blues and gospels ("You sold my love for a song", "God is singing the blues", "Any way you want me") all the way to his signature hard rock ("Day late and a dollar short", "Sugar plum"). Tracks like "Primadonna" and "Country mile" are simply beautiful. "Gungha Din", "Chandra's Coriander" are excellent. Definitely 5 stars!

I thought that with Gillan, how can I miss? This is one of the worst Gillan cd's I have ever heard, not an interesting memorable track on the entire cd. Gillan fans be warned.
