When it comes to John Zorn's pantheon, "A Dreamers Christmas" may be the most unusual ornament on the tree. As heart-warming holiday films tend to grant the most unlikely of miracles, Santa left a real treat for good little listeners with "A Dreamers Christmas." For starters, this is the great Dreamers band! Forget about grandma's Eggnog Cheesecake. It even has better ingredients than Ye Olde Yule Wassail by including Marc Ribot, Kenny Woollesen, Joey Baron, Jamie Saft, Trevor Dunn and Cyro Baptista. It's all about the vibe. These guys have found and perfected the state of mind known as 'chill.' Practicing restraint, this melodic adventure is always relaxed and open. The warm Exotica sounds of "Dreamers" and "O'o" percolate through this material to create what could be the perfect soundtrack to a Christmas in Southern California. Hey, you finally got home for the holidays -the rush is over and it's time to pour a cocktail and enjoy yourself. Once you kick your feet up and bask in the red and green glow of the lights, you're ready to listen to what John Zorn has brought to this season. 'Winter Wonderland' kicks things off. It is a relaxed, jazzy version that's accented with sleigh bells, vibes and chimes. 'Snowfall' is a slow piece that is gently moved along with Cyro Baptista's percussion and punctuated by the occasional guitar solo. 'Snowfall' is a rare and beautiful exploration of texture and nuance. The next song just had to be done on this album. 'Christmas Time Is Here,' brings back fond memories of "...Read more ›

Looking for something new in Christmas music? Tired of the same ol' same ol'? I was.
Then I happened upon an article on NPR about a CD called Dreamer's Christmas; sampled a few tracks on line and knew I had to have this.
The music (some original compositions, some old favorites) is so cleverly, and artistically arranged that even the Christmas 'standards' sound new. I don't gravitate to Jazz, but this CD is the exception. Played it over and over again in my car all season long. My teenage daughter loved it. It's a 'keeper'.

Just challenging enough to keep your attention, but not something that would drive the guests out of the room at a Christmas party. My familiarity w/ Zorn runs to Naked City (whom I saw many years ago at the Knitting Factory in NYC) and other more avant-garde stuff, so this was a bit of a surprise.

The opening of "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" sounds lifted straight from Joseph Spence's truly bizarre version of the tune.

I had a digital copy of this album and couldn't wait to get my hands on a warm, deep, vinyl copy. Unfortunately, the mastering of the vinyl version disappoints. Sounds like they mixed it for mp3, and just pressed it into vinyl. That said, I'd probably buy it again, anyway. Zorn is, indeed, a genius, and the music is lovely.

Pretty much the greatest Christmas album of the 21st Century! It collects the spirit and warmth of an over exaggerated season... The Dreamers nailed it on this collection!

I did not know what to expect of Zorns entry into the vast Christmas recordings sub genre, but the Dreamers seem to cover a reasonably wide swath of most of the possibilities, which has kept my interest over repeated listenings for the traditional 4 weeks of being exposed to every imaginable musical interpretation of the Christmas holidays.
The Dreamers approach includes respectfully straight yet fresh readings to several tunes, especially the gorgeous Claude Thornhill tune Snowfall, as well as improvisationally challenging tales on other less harmonically challenging tunes such as Let it Snow and Santa Clause is Coming to Town.
Easily Recommended.
