Editorial Reviews

Review

“To me, the best history books bring the past to life. And the very best ones appreciate the true complexity of that process. Miracles & Massacres does exactly that. Glenn gives you triumphs AND tragedy. Heroes AND villains. And along the way, he'll inspire you and bring tears to your eyes.  Get ready, you’re about to see why history is the greatest story of all.” (BRAD MELTZER,  bestselling author of The Fifth Assassin and History Decoded)

“Glenn’s story-telling in Miracles and Massacres is moving, provocative, and masterful. Each chapter reads like a non-fiction novelette. The book shows how the good, the bad, and the ugly of American history should be narrated: vividly and unflinchingly. These true-life tales also serve as stand-alone study guides -- inviting further discussion, debate, and action. It’s perfect for homeschoolers, classical educators, and history buffs of all ages. I can guarantee you two things: 1) Once you pick up Miracles and Massacres, you won’t be able to put down; and 2) You won’t be able to read it just once!”

(MICHELLE MALKIN, bestselling author of Culture of Corruption)

Format: Hardcover
Dreamers and Deceivers: True Stories of the Heroes and Villains Who Made America by #1 bestselling author and popular radio and television host Glenn Beck is delightful, enjoyable and an informative account of people who have contributed in no small measures to the making and unmaking of America. Written in the style of his earlier bestselling book, Miracles and Massacres: True and Untold Stories of the Making of America, this book is a treasure trove of information and history which will fascinate and mesmerize readers.

Dreamers and Deceivers is a collection from the archives of history about people working for good or evil, heroes or villains, who are familiar yet have a side to their lives that is not well known. Glenn Beck includes people who have a story or message to tell, and in doing so he includes peoples from opposite ends of the pole. What is simply striking about the stories is the meticulous research undertaken by Glenn Beck to fit into the larger scheme of his book.

Contrary to others who write reviews based solely upon their political leanings (especially those willing to give only one star), this book is a well written work of historical fiction/biography. It is very much on par in quality with something like Ken Follet's works...regardless of what you think of him politically...but is not full of indecent language and indecent content simply to widen a reader base.

Beck draws out historically accurate points for each of the people in this book, and provides fascinating back story to some of the glossed over or taken-for-granted events in history. He in no way sugarcoats the 'good guys', or makes villains of the 'bad'. He states things the way they happened and leaves the reader to decide where to see the good and bad in each example.

Learning the true stories, that no one knows about some of the people that helped shaped America. Stories about people like Desi Arnaz, Walt Disney and Steve Jobs. Learning why a Ponzi Scheme is called a Ponzi scheme, learning about the early days of radio and about the guy who actually invented the computer. Dreamers and Deceiver, lets you explore the history of people; we probably never give much thought about but who may have effected our lives in at least some seemingly small way like Grover Cleveland.

Overall, I think the book is good to obtain a knowledge of the events that transpired in history. Perhaps 4 stars for that. History is an important subject that is neglected by many. Those who read this book will benefit from those events presented in it.

On the other hand, being a person who enjoys history (just the facts ma'm), I did not like the imagined conversations / events being presented. After reading two chapters I had to look up a reference and learned that conversations were made up in a number of instances. A book and movie are two different things. I can go to a movie and expect Hollywood to make dramatic changes in order to sell entertainment. Although this book may present a reliable historical conclusion, I thought the book was solely a history account. Other than the Disney chapter, I did not read any remaining chapters because of these imagined conversations. The Walt Disney chapter appealed to me due to my wishes to learn the detailed account of EPCOT, how it deviated from its original plans and what its status is today. Althoughh the reason was given for its failures in a few sentences, there were no further details.

Some things just seem to stick in my mind after reading them and I do not wish to wonder later if my recollections were based on fact or not. Two stars because of that.
