5.0 out of 5 stars the missing big brother songs.........
a song by big brother and the holding company (featuring janis joplin) makes an appearance in the film The Dreamers, twice.
yet, is not included with the soundtrack CD.
the song is titled "i need a man to love" and the version used in the film is not the "cheap thrills" version but another version that can be found on the cd "live at winterland 1968"...

3.0 out of 5 stars Obvious omission
I recently saw "The Dreamers," and I must say the music is by far the best feature. The storyline is, in my opinion, pretty weird, but hearing Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company several times during the film is just great. I believe most of that is from the "Cheap Thrills" album, but there are also a couple of extended riffs by Big...

one more short snippet of a 'cheap thrills' song "combination of the two" heard during the film is also from this winterland '68 cd.
a 2nd Doors song "maggie m'gill" is heard during the film but not available on the soundtrack cd .
and a bob dylan song "queen jane approximately" is also heard during the film but is not included on the soundtrack cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars IF only..., February 18, 2006
This review is from: The Dreamers - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
IF they included the joplin songs and the missing songs, this soundtrack wouldve been SO INCREDIBLE. The thing is, they include some of the rock stuff in the soundtrack..but it is completely outnumbered by the more french, sweeter sounding songs. A successful soundtrack captures the feel of the movie in the cd and if they included songs like Janis Joplin - I need a man to love (which, in my opinon, captures the feeling of the movie sooooooo well), this cd wouldve been that much more successful in terms of effectively capturing the movie into soundtrack form. But, the music, nonetheless, is fantastic.
ALSO, I AM ALSO TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE MENU SONG IS. THAT SONG IS THE STANDOUT SONG IN THE MOVIE (which is sad because its only in the menu), BUT JESUS IT SOUNDS GREAT. PLEASE, DOESNT ANYONE KNOW WHAT THAT SONG IS?!?!!?

i know this is a short review, but the music quite possibly MAKES the entire movie. its expertly chosen, amazingly placed, and even better carried off.

to make a long rambling paragraph short... it takes serious balls to put Jimi Hendrix music in a movie and pull it off. This soundtrack does it and does it well. Most fall too heavily into their '60's' mode and use cliches. This takes those cliches and SUCEEDS and reminds exactly WHY so many have tried and failed before.

An amazing album. If you're a fan of the movie this is a must-own.

4.0 out of 5 stars DVD Menu Song, September 11, 2008
This review is from: The Dreamers - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
To answer the big question, the elusive song that plays during the menu playback is an instrumental cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing." I don't know who covers it, though.

4.0 out of 5 stars this is real music, March 6, 2004

If you had ever heard Steve Miller's "Song For Our Ancestors" before, you probably thought it would sound great in a movie...it does, and it does not sound like any Steve Miller you have ever heard before, so smooth, so cool, so perfect for this movie. Jimi's "Third Stone" and the rest of this soundtrack match the visual pleasures that the movie offers. This is true art.

4.0 out of 5 stars What the hell...., February 12, 2007
This review is from: The Dreamers - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
There seems to be so much missing music on this thing that was in the film, or even in the title menu (which I have no idea about because I actually saw it on the IFC channel), but there is one particular song that I didnt hear on the album either. Its hard to even describe it but theyre playing it when he first gets invited to the house and the boy and Theo are walking through the hallways. Its like this really cool kind of guitar thing going. I dont know. Does anyone have any idea what the hell Im talking about?????/

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dream of an album, July 28, 2006
This review is from: The Dreamers - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
By all standards: WONDERFUL! it's one of the finest movie scores I've got recently. It's quite varied and different to anything I have listened before. It contains great themes from "Les 400 Coups", Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead and Françoise Hardy, to end up magnificently with Edith Piaf in the finest remastered version for "Non, Je ne Regrette Rien": you'll listen to Piaf as she is: a Goddess.
Ony two "buts": 1. the themes do not appear in the order they are heard in the film and
2. not all the themes heard in the film are in the CD. In the movie you find the famous Fred Astaire in "Let's Face the Music and Dance", "No Strings" (from "Top Hat")and, among others, the marvelous melody from "Queen Christina" when Greta Garbo is bidding goodbye to the the room she's spent with John Gilbert, a scene which you also see in the movie.
Anyhow, for any movie buff who has loved this movie, this soundtrack is a must. If you haven't seen it yet, run to the next video shop and get it: it's an excellent movie, specially for cinema lovers.

I believe most of that is from the "Cheap Thrills" album, but there are also a couple of extended riffs by Big Brother that are both good and raw power. If the CD had included the Janis and BB cuts, I would have given it a higher, perhaps much higher, rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Obvious reason, May 28, 2004

I LOVE this soundtrack. Its eclectic and very representative of the film. And in answer to the previous reviews, perhaps the reason those songs are missing from the soundtrack are because the rights were not given.
