2.0 out of 5 stars Little progress, lots of repetition.
First off, I love Karen Marie Moning's books for the most part. All except the last two. I loved all of her earlier books because they were new, well-paced, humorous, mystical, romantic and just plain fantastic. When I started reading the Fever series I was surprised at her turn to the dark side of the Fae, but I trustingly went along for the ride.
Books one...

Okay, I love, love, love any work by Karen Marie Moning. I think she has a gift for creating enthralling, sexy page turners and I'm completely addicted to the Fever series. I was desperate for each and every novel's release and I devoured DreamFever in a little over 6 hours... BUT, the unanswered questions and cliff hangers are getting - nope, scratch that, ARE - tiresome. I felt the same way after Faefever and it's only been amplified by the unsatisfactory ending of Dreamfever. I realized that, once again, questions that were initiated in Book 1 are still NOT resolved in Book 4 and [naturally] we get some NEW questions. If I were a man, I'd say Karen is pretty adept at giving me an extreme case of literary blue balls. I felt sort of betrayed and tired at the end of DreamFever - I'm dying to know the official status of Jericho and Mac's relationship [and I agree with another poster - I don't care what he did or what kind of monster he is - I want them to wind up together soo badly - with maybe 1 little detour in V'Lane's bed before their HEA, lol]. I'm tired of books where it ends with Mac in a horrid situation and you don't know who's going to rescue her - hopefully herself for once. All that aside, though, the book is a fun, quick read and leaves you parched for more. Mac is developing into an even better kick a$$ character although I wonder if she strays a little too far to the dark side... there were some virtues to pink Mac I think. Much to the publisher's delight, I'll definitely buy the next book, but I wish I'd never laid eyes on this series until all 5 cursed books were on the shelves. I'm also a shade dubious about Karen cramming and resolving everything neatly in this 5th book since she didn't do it in 4. So instead of 5 stars, I'm gonna have to subtract 1 because my immediate reaction after finishing this novel was utter disappointment for all the reasons noted above. I hope to God they don't make us wait another year for ShadowFever. Give me a short story or something in the interim, PLEASE!!

Books one and two were new for me (I rarely read dark-themed books) but once I got used to that I thought they were pretty good. In the last two books however, things seem to have gotten very repetitive. Mac has gone from perfectly matched, polished, beautiful, and blonde in pink and rainbows to lean, jagged, scruffy, rough and now Mac in black...got it already, can we move on now? There are more monsters in the Unseelie world than will ever be known, and they all keep getting more and more horrific. Again, got it...over and over and over again. Can we move on here also?
She still hasn't gotten answers regarding Barrons, V'lane, the Sinsar Dubh, her own place as a player on the board etc. Nothing really seems to have progressed at all in the last two books. She still in the same dilemma, going in the same direction, dealing with the same major issues and still in the same dark as usual. The author just keeps changing the physical locations and the appearances of the monsters. The story just doesn't seem to be developing and growing anymore. Enough already. I just want to get to the end.
I think this story would have been way better if it had been kept to 3 books at most. I will be far more cautious about investing in future series by Ms Moning. Sadly, this one is becoming very long, disappointing and expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! The Suspense is rising up toward a conclusion that is sure to rattle the pages of the next/final book., August 18, 2009

This review is from: Dreamfever (Hardcover)
When I first read Darkfever I was stunned at how much it differed from KMM's Highlander series. It wasn't a single volume romance. It was in first person. WTH happened? My initial shock preceded my appreciation of the story. I reread it. I loved it. By the second book we see a dynamic change in Mac as a character. She goes from being a barbie, too stupid to live almost, to being strong. To being extremely interesting. To being a character that women could look up to.

Dreamfever picks up from where Faefever leaves off. Mac is at the worst place in her life one could be. When she is able to get back into the fight, she really does. Gone is the barbie doll of the past for good, now she is a living weapon seeking revenge.

So what if her story takes 5 books rather than 1. Would you rather have a huge story condensed into one book and lose half the dynamics of the character changes? Or would you rather have the complete and total story?

Questions are being answered, leaving just enough left over (plus a few new ones) to be answered in the final book. No the books are not Harry Potter, nor do they try to be. Karen Marie Moning is a brilliant woman with incredible talent for story telling. Dreamfever is probably the best in the series, with each book getting better than the last. I am not going to give away plot details in this review as I feel it takes away from the reading experience. But let it be said that the story will grip you, and when you reach the final page you will be ready for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Karen....PLEASE, August 19, 2009
This review is from: Dreamfever (Hardcover)
Karen!! Please don't make us wait upwards of a year again! I don't know how you as the author can stand not to tell us this story faster! I love it all...but faster, faster, faster!! I'm groveling at your feet, begging you to stop this torment!

Yes it's taking Mac time to evolve, if it didn't I would wonder how complete and sincere her change is. Very few things in life cause an immediate about face that lasts.

I do find it annoying that we can't get into JZB's head the way we could the Highlanders. However, actions speak louder than words and Barron's actions tell me all I need to know about his feelings for Mac. I can't wait to find out the nitty gritty on him, I don't care what kind of monster he's been in the past!

I'm wondering at this point about V'lane...is he okay? Is his attitude really changing about humans? Is his kindness and fascination with Mac only about the power she's coming into and who she will be? Or does he have real feelings for her?

Christian seems to be on a major path to trial by fire that will toughen him up getting him ready to be a major player in a future series!

5.0 out of 5 stars So Fecking Good!!, August 19, 2009
This review is from: Dreamfever (Hardcover)
I have my usual gripes with this book, that I've had with the whole series, that have nothing to do with the story itself - I read it too fast and now I have to wait so long for the next (and FINAL!!) installment.

Other than that, this book was fantastic! The best yet, IMO. It had all the usual suspense, plot twists and great dialouge KMM is famous for, and we finally got some answers.

*****SPOILERS*****

I am a huge Barrons fan and my man really came through in this book. We learned so much about him; his past and his motivations for doing what he does and being the way he is. We also saw a much softer side to him in this installment.

The supporting characters were more fleshed out in this book and are really coming into their own (Dani, Christian, Ryodan...) Hopefully there will be some spin offs, because after dragging Mac's story over 5 books, I don't think KMM can wrap up everything for everyone in the final book. It would seem to rushed.

I am looking forward to re-reading this book again, since I am sure I missed some crucial details in the wee hours of the morning.

Thanks KMM for another fantasic read!!

2.0 out of 5 stars FRUSTRATED, August 23, 2009
This review is from: Dreamfever (Hardcover)
This series has got to be the most frustrating I have ever read. I like the concept of the series and most of the characters are just this side of likable. It seems like there is never a complete enough picture of the characters to push me over the edge into being completely sucked in. Mac seems to be having flashes of maturity, but then does something stupid or totally misses the obvious. Was the ending really a surprise, she couldn't put the pieces togather and figure that out as even a possiabilty. Really?

I agree with many of the other reviews that breaking this series into "installments" is a total marketing ploy by the author. The story jumps around from this to that and never really fills in all the blanks. This is the reason I stopped watching Lost, so many questions and not enough answers. I will read the finally installment just to get the series over and done with, but I will definitely trying not to get my hopes up that the conclusion will answer all the questions that have been raised. I would suggest Moning have a little more respect for her fans and focus more on writing a solid book, instead of trying to generate more revenue by drawing out her story unnecessarily. The series would have been so much better as a single book instead of several that are mostly just explaining what has already happen, but of course that would have been less profitable for the author and the publisher.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, Feel Manipulated ... just a bit., August 27, 2009
This review is from: Dreamfever (Hardcover)
Dreamfever is the 4th of a 5 fantasy book series. The reader follows MacKayla Lane (Mac - the heroine)thru a journey of self discovery & growth which takes place during the ultimate fight between good and evil. This is not a stand alone book and should not be purchased as such. If you are interested in the synopsis of Dreamfever, make sure you read the first 3 books first. Also, beware that the publisher does not release the next and last installment for another year. This can be very frustrating for the reader, each book ends with a cliffhanger and more questions seem to arise than are answered.

Dreamfever seems more like a bridge to another series of books and a "quick we need to fill gaps in the characters personality" than an actual installment of quality. Karen Moning is an outstanding writer but we do not see her gift here. Unfortunately, at this point, the series is screaming "sold out for the bucks!".

First let me say I got the audio version of this book and both readers rocked! I'd like to call the male reader up once a week for a "fix", he has the best male reader voice I've heard in a long time. I did have a problem with the discs though, every single one except the first would take forever to load when I put it in my car cd player, and several of them had to be ejected and re-loaded 4 or 5 times before they would play. Frustrating as heck when you are driving on the highway at 65 mph and have to keep ejecting the cd. I do not have this problem with other audio books, so it must be this brand.

As for the story. I read a lot of series books and most do not leave you with a cliff hanger. They might leave a storyline unfinished, but if they leave you that tied up in the plot, the next book is usually out a lot sooner than 12 months. I am not convinced this has anything to do with anything but money for the publisher. They want time to sell lots of hard covers, then go to paperback. Then you get the new book. Books 1 & 2 didn't end like 3 & 4, so it is possible to "pull a Harry Potter" and "end" on a positive note each time. After all, we are going to keep reading so cut us a little slack on the cliff hanger stuff. Karen herself has said the entire series is already all planned out, so give us book 5 sooner please!

I did enjoy the book, but I wish I had waited until all 5 books were out before I started the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wait until all 5 are published, August 19, 2009
This review is from: Dreamfever (Hardcover)
I'll start off by saying that I love this series. Fantastic story, characters, details etc. Will be something I read over and over again. The Fever world Karen Marie Moning has created is amazing and unlike anything I have read before. However, I wish I had not read them yet. I Hate being left hanging over and over again. If there was a shorter time between books it would be one thing, but I doubt there is a chance of Shadowfever being released until next year. I will never buy another Moning series until they are all released and then I am sure I will enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed these but without the frustration. So bottom line...read them since they are fantastic but wait until they are all released if you have not already started.

This is a fantastic page-turner. I'm not a Moning fan. I got this book only because the first book in the series was a Kindle freebie for a while. I thought, whatever, for free, might as well look at it. After staying up all night reading the first book, I immediately bought the next and the next and the next. This is NOT a romance series! Many of the negative reviews are from people who wanted a romance. This is more of an action/adventure/suspense series and I love it. It is true that there are some repetitive parts and a little too much detail in certain background areas about the heroine's previous existence as a pink-loving girlie girl, but you can skim over those and get to the meat. And there's plenty of great stuff!! LOVE it!!
