Elaine Greenstein spins a sweet lullaby in this book that invites readers to count the elements of a dream: 10 houses, 9 trees, 8 leaves...all the way down to 1 child curled comfortably in bed.

Elaine Greenstein's soothing words and beautiful illustrations have a mesmerizing effect. Children will barely be able to keep their eyes open long enough to realize that they're practicing counting during their bedtime story. When they wake up, they'll want to go right out and find Greenstein's other books, including Mattie's Hats Won't Wear That! and Mrs. Rose's Garden. Dreaming is a sleepy-time ode to peaceful, happy dreams. (Ages 2 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Dreaming (A Countdown to Sleep),
By Della M> Graham (New Orleans, LA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dreaming: A Countdown to Sleep (Hardcover)
Elaine Greenstein's DREAMING evokes the same sweetness as her earlier books MRS. ROSE'S GARDEN and THE MITTEN TREE. Her illustrations in this book seem familiar in a nostalgic, comforting way. Perhaps they remind me of Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' with a pastel, feminine twist. DREAMING is a hypnotic, backwards countdown from ten that would lull anyone, young or old, into the land of dreamy dreams.

This one's going back,

This review is from: Dreaming: A Countdown to Sleep (Hardcover)
The pictures are beautiful, but I didn't like the story at all. There was no rhythm or rhyme to the words, and the story was disjointed and unconnected. Not sure what the author was trying to do here ...

Peaceful bedtime counting book, not a storybook,
This review is from: Dreaming: A Countdown to Sleep (Hardcover)
This is a quiet, peaceful book. There's no story, really, just counting. 10 silent houses; 9 trees; 8 leaves; 7 stars; 6 fish; 5 clouds; 4 peaches; 3 foxes; 2 water lilies; 1 swan. "Here you are, almost sleeping" "Sweet dreams." Each page has good descriptive language for the objects being counted. A good book to read last at bedtime.
