A Good Album, but Less Energy than Live,
By Ty Williams (Westerville, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dreaming In Hell's Kitchen (Audio CD)
I bought this album while listening to the Prodigals at the Dublin Irish and Scottish Festival. If you haven't been lucky enough to catch The Prodgals in concert, their live shows are amazing. When I got back to the car I was somewhat dismayed to find out that the album is much more mellow than the live act. The highest energy tracks on the album (Jackie Hall, Out of Mind) barely match the mellowest part of the concert. After listening to the album for several days, I realized that it was a great album in it's own right. When taken without the expectation of an almost hard-rock energy, it's a very nice work. I highly recommend this album to anyone seeking music that is very obviously traditional whilst still having an edge. A note to all the bass players, some of the lines are impressive, try the riff that starts track 6 (Jackie Hall).

The Best Jig-Punk Band Around!,
This review is from: Dreaming In Hell's Kitchen (Audio CD)
If you ever have a chance to see The Prodigals play live (they play all over the world) do yourself a favor and check them out, you will not be disappointed! They are an intensely rythmic, energetic Irish group that can enliven a room more than I have ever seen. Fortunately all of that energy comes through on "Dreaming in Hell's Kitchen"... This is an album that you can listen to over and over again from the opener "Happy Man" to the closing title track. Although this is actually their third album (the other two are also stellar) they have reached a higher level of complex riffs and rythms that really get you moving to the music, especially while lifting a pint! The Prodigals make you proud to be Irish...but even if you're not, they'll have you dancing a jig in a matter of minutes. Ray, Gregory, Brian & Andrew each bring together their unique musical stylings that make listening to them an amazingly energizing experience!

Not what it says on the label,

a sticker on the cover says they are NY's answer to the pogues. It's better than that - not just a copycat band - closer to the Saw Doctors than the Pogues but with their own edgegreat stuff
