A Good Album, but Less Energy than Live,
By Ty Williams (Westerville, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dreaming In Hell's Kitchen (Audio CD)
I bought this album while listening to the Prodigals at the Dublin Irish and Scottish Festival. If you haven't been lucky enough to catch The Prodgals in concert, their live shows are amazing. When I got back to the car I was somewhat dismayed to find out that the album is much more mellow than the live act. The highest energy tracks on the album (Jackie Hall, Out of Mind) barely match the mellowest part of the concert. After listening to the album for several days, I realized that it was a great album in it's own right. When taken without the expectation of an almost hard-rock energy, it's a very nice work. I highly recommend this album to anyone seeking music that is very obviously traditional whilst still having an edge. A note to all the bass players, some of the lines are impressive, try the riff that starts track 6 (Jackie Hall).

The Best Jig-Punk Band Around!,
This review is from: Dreaming In Hell's Kitchen (Audio CD)
If you ever have a chance to see The Prodigals play live (they play all over the world) do yourself a favor and check them out, you will not be disappointed! They are an intensely rythmic, energetic Irish group that can enliven a room more than I have ever seen. Fortunately all of that energy comes through on "Dreaming in Hell's Kitchen"... This is an album that you can listen to over and over again from the opener "Happy Man" to the closing title track. Although this is actually their third album (the other two are also stellar) they have reached a higher level of complex riffs and rythms that really get you moving to the music, especially while lifting a pint! The Prodigals make you proud to be Irish...but even if you're not, they'll have you dancing a jig in a matter of minutes. Ray, Gregory, Brian & Andrew each bring together their unique musical stylings that make listening to them an amazingly energizing experience!

Not what it says on the label,

a sticker on the cover says they are NY's answer to the pogues. It's better than that - not just a copycat band - closer to the Saw Doctors than the Pogues but with their own edgegreat stuff

Good Craic!,

I saw the Prodigals recently in Cambridge MA at HOUSE OF BLUES and they rock! They are all talented and personable musicians who mingle with the crowd during the break between sets. DREAMING is really one of the best CDs I've heard. ALL the songs are great (tho' I'm partial to reels) and are the kind that get stuck in your head, so that you find yourself humming them as you wheel your cart down the aisles in the grocery store! The 2nd CD, GO ON, is just as fun. Don't pass up a chance to see them live--you won't regret it!

Best Irish Rock band next to U2!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dreaming In Hell's Kitchen (Audio CD)
U2 is more rock than Irish. The Prodigals play up traditional Celtic music into rock. If you like Michael Flatley's "Lord of the Dance", you get the picture. "Dreaming" is their best CD to date, though "Go On" comes very close. These guys get bigger and better each time. The live shows are high energy rock concerts but without the obsenities and drugs, so they make great family events. They are, without doubt the next generation of Irish music. Buy the CD, crank up the volume, and enjoy!

You're Welcome in This Kitchen,
By Maureen Wade (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews

After hearing The Prodigals 2nd CD, "Go On", I didn't think they could get any better. But, they have. Being a huge fan of traditional Irish music, I can appreciate The Prodigals jig-punk style. A perfect blend of tadtitional Irish tunes and good old American rock-n-roll, "Dreaming in Hells Kitchen" will definitely get your toes tapping and your mouth singing. "Happy Man" and "Last Night as I Lay Dreaming" are two of the more upbeat tracks, great for singing, daydreaming and dancing to. "The Sailors Return" is a wonderful arrangement of traditional tunes, picking up tempo as it progresses. Get out there and buy their ablums. Every track on every album is excellent in its own way! Also, they're a good looking bunch!

They just get better and better,

I have seen the Prodigals Live and they are absolutely brilliant in person. Not only have I seen them live, but I have talked to them - and they are fantastic people to know. We have all three of the CD's, and though Greg claims to be fond of the first, I must say this is my favorite, with "Go On" in a close second. Each song is very listenable, and I have never had a problem listening to the entire CD over and over again. I'm sure I'm going to need a new one for when I play this one to death. My favorites are "Happy Man," "Baggot Street," "Paddy's Heaven," for it's brilliant rhythm and use of Celtic Rock, "Out of Mind," and "Dreaming in Hell's Kitchen," and.....well, heck, I love the whole CD!!! It's incredible difficult to pick favorites. But if you ever have the chance to see them at a venue or festival, you must go to get the full experience.

Great Jig Punk!,
By Mandy Henning (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dreaming In Hell's Kitchen (Audio CD)
I've seen the Prodigals several times live, and the mix of traditional and modern styles is at first a little befuddling, then completely addictive. Dreaming is their best cd yet (although Go On is great too). It's one of those cds that you put in and listen to all the way through.. you won't want to skip through this one. It's become my favorite album by far!
