About the Author

About E.J. Ourso...
E.J. OURSO, who owned Security Industrial Insurance Co. for nearly half a century, is considered one of the most successful businesspeople in Louisiana history.

Born on June 16, 1923, he started his career in business at age 10, selling scrap paper and iron during the Depression. He graduated in 1940 as salutatorian at Catholic High of Donaldsonville and went on to major in journalism and English literature at Louisiana State University. After three and a half years at LSU he was called to active duty in the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theater and was an artillery officer at the Battle of the Bulge under Gen. George Patton.

Following the war he married Marjory Barbier, and they had six children. They started Security Industrial Insurance in 1948 with $10,000 capital and sold the company in 1996 in a deal valued at $180 million. Philanthropists for most of their business careers, the Oursos provided support for unwed mothers with stillborn babies, the poor of their own community of Donaldsonville, and impoverished religious nuns, brothers and priests, among others.

He is a recipient of the St. Louis Medallion (given by the Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans), was named a Knight of St. Gregory by Pope John Paul II, and received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from LSU. In 1996 the LSU Business School was renamed for him; it became the E.J. Ourso College of Business Administration.

About Dan Marin...
DAN MARIN teaches business ethics and business strategy in the William W. and Catherine M. Rucks Department of Management at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He came to LSU in 1984 to serve as Director of the Masters of Business Administration program. Later he was an Associate Dean of LSU's E.J. Ourso College of Business Administration, before joining the Management Department.

He holds a BA in English from Oberlin College in Ohio, a PhD in English from the University of Iowa, and an MBA from the University of South Carolina, where, for eight years, he taught in the Department of English. For four years he was training director for Columbia, S.C., newspapers.

He has published fiction, nonfiction, poetic translation, literary criticism, and scholarly articles about business theory and business communication. He and his wife, Ali, have reared three daughters. They live with their youngest in Baton Rouge.
