Nice, but not full HD,

This review is from: Dreaming Nevada [HD DVD] (HD DVD)
Those looking for a demonstration disc to show off their new 1080p resolution projector or large screen flat panel should look elsewhere. The credits at the end say it was shot in "High Definition 1080 x 720." Unfortunately, 1080 x 720 is not an HD format. They may have meant 1280x720. But in any event, it is not full 1920x1080 resolution, as most HD DVD movies and demo discs are. So this disc will probably look great on a 42" plasma TV, but if you blow it up to 100" or larger, it will look a bit fuzzy compared to other HD DVD materials you may be used to seeing.
Other than the compromise in HD video quality, the disc is a pleasant collection of helicopter views over Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, and of course Las Vegas. It is nicely edited and compiled. I just wish it were full high definition. I would not have purchased it had I known this ahead of time.

Breathtaking....awesome!,

Since I very much enjoyed the "Dreaming Arizona" HD DVD, I looked forward to the follow-up release.
I was not disappointed. Having been to Vegas numerous times (like most of us) I have to say, I've never seen Vegas like you see it in this stunning HD DVD. Some of the night time helicopter aerials are filmed with very unusual camera angles, reminding me of those futuristic tracking shots in Blade Runner. (BTW I noticed in one of the night time aerials that Bellagio was completely dark....never seen the blackout of a casino in Vegas!) Beyond Vegas, the most surprising revelation to me is the Mars-like landscape of the Valley of Fire. I've only been to Red Rock Canyon (20 mins drive from the Vegas Strip). Valley of Fire is about an 90 minute drive from Vegas. The Valley of Fire shots are spectacular, both the helicopter aerials as well as the car POV shots. Now I see why Valley of Fire locations are used a lot for movies and commercials... This DVD also covers Red Rock Canyon and Hoover Dam. And you'll see Lake Las Vegas, which is a weird fake-Italian town with resort hotels and golf courses on the edge of Lake Mead. Worth checking out on your next trip. Overall, I highly recommend this HD DVD!!

Nevada surprise...there is more than Area 54,

When it comes to the battle of the HD formats, I'm not sitting on the fence. I own a Toshiba HD DVD player and a Sony Blue Ray player.
The "dreaming Nevada" standard def DVD has been in my collection since it came out in 2005. Now that it's out on HDDVD, I snapped it up (great price). Ask almost anybody, what comes to mind when you think of Nevada, the first thing is Vegas, then you think long and hard and of course you think desert wasteland, Area 54 and maybe Lake Tahoe (not covered in his DVD). Surprise news flash: Southern Nevada has a lot to offer besides Vegas. Stunning landscapes! And there is something to be said about the artificial beauty of Vegas. There is beauty here if you see it through the "candy colored" eyes of Tom Wolfe in his Vegas book in which he elevated Las Vegas architecture of neon kitsch to a genuine art form of the American century. The surround sound music is awesome and the cinematography is gorgeous. Besides the night time sections (the DVD also features daytime drive shots of the Strip), my favorite parts are Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon. The Map Movie shows you how close everything is to Vegas. HD buffs like me who expect great picture quality will not be disappointed. Also, the bonus materials include "Tribute to the Chairman" with two great songs and a singer who sounds just like Frank.
