Book Description

Original Publication Date: 3/1/2013

Their passion was ignited by a treachery neither of them could have ever foreseen, yet it resulted in a love that was destined to last forever…

To secure the wellbeing of her beloved family, Melody Settrington agrees to marry Charles Cavendish, the elderly Earl of Edgington, despite her reservations. However, the innocent young beauty has no idea what her new husband will demand of her once they are legally wed. It isn’t long however, before Melody discovers that the widowed earl had a purpose in choosing her for his bride, the daughter of an impoverished country baron. Impotent and childless, Charles is in desperate need of an heir, in addition to someone he can force into going along with the heinous scheme he has concocted.

Gavin Montrose, son of the wealthy Duke of Rutherford, is as charming as he is handsome. However, unbeknownst to him, he is also the man Charles Cavendish has selected to father his heir. Abducted from the grounds of his family’s country estate, he awakens to find himself in the midst of a nightmare. Assuming that he has been abducted for ransom, Gavin is stunned to learn of his mysterious abductor’s true purpose. To gain his freedom and protect his family from harm, he must father a child he will never meet, with a woman whose name he will never know and whose face he will never see.

Desperate to safeguard the people they love, both Melody and Gavin have no choice but to go along with the insanity that has been forced upon them or suffer the unbearable consequences. Compelled to meet in absolute darkness in the bedchamber of an isolated cottage, their identities a fiercely guarded secret, they will develop a bond neither of them had anticipated and discover a passion more powerful than either of them could have possibly imagined. But dare they call it love?

Years later, when fate intervenes and Gavin and Melody’s paths inadvertently cross…

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep, Dark and Sensual March 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Charles Cavendish, the Earl of Edgington, is an old, wealthy, bitter man with a dark soul. A man who enjoys using his wealth and power to manipulate people. He is so evil that when he chooses his victims to obtain what he wants, no end justifies the means. He discovers what is most precious and loved the most to get what he wants from his victims. In this case, the victim is his own recently married 18 year old wife Melody, and the son of the wealthiest and most prestigous Duke of Rutherford, Gavin Montrose. Charles has no physical ability to father an heir. He decides to do the most shocking. Force his wife to obtain that heir from another. Melody, so very young and innocent, now realizes why she, the daughter of an impoverished Baron, was chosen by this older Earl. Her loving family desperately needs the funds from her marriage for the care of her very ill brother. She realizes she has no choice in being the pawn of this vile scheme, otherwise, her family will be destitute and her brother will die without the care needed for his special illness.

The youngest son of the Duke of Rutherford, Gavin Montrose, only remembers walking in the garden with his beloved sister and hearing her screams as four men attacked and abducted him, only to wake up in an unknown cottage with a note stating he is do something horribly vile to a young innocent who will be meeting with him or his family will suffer. Melody and Gavin, pawns in this evil scheme, must comply to the evil Earl's commands, get Melody with child, while not only seeing each other in a darkened room, but also not talk and give away their names or any other personal information. While the weeks go by, they at first uncomfortably do what has to be done in order to protect those they love.

3.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Story With Some Plot Holes July 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was captivated by this story from the first word on. It was a story that made me feel. Throughout Melody and Gavin's growing friendship and love for each other there was a strong bond that would surely hold as they dreamed and hoped to find each other again after they were released from the cabin.

The issues I have here are first, if she was so much in love with him, why did she not look for him when her creepy husband died and she was free to do so? You don't look for the love of your life while hidden in the country. You spend the season in London with your eyes peeled. The second issue--and this one is huge, is Gavin's reaction when he finds her: ACCUSATIONS, ACCUSATIONS, ACCUSATIONS. Come on, give the girl a chance to put a word in edgewise, please. Instead he believes everything the scumbag nephew says about her and accuses her of plotting the whole elaborate and diabolical scheme at the age of what--eighteen? Not believable. For this reason from the moment he accused her of plotting his abduction, etc., and the mousy way she bows her head to his orders: "Pack everything, we're leaving," "We're getting married," etc., I just skipped pages, trying to find the place when Gavin finds the real truth: (really, by someone literally smacking him on the face with it) and realizes what a jerk he was.

I will read other works by this author, because I believe she has talent and the ability to come up with highly original plots. This one, though, earns three stars only, because of the above reasons.

2.0 out of 5 stars good concept, poor execution April 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was very bought into the premise of this book - even if it seemed a bit "out there". However, there were just so many substantive flaws I skimmed to finish it. The characters aren't developed and show no growth despite the fact the book takes place over 7 years. They are also unhappy for 80% of the story so it's one of those books with a happy ending that you don't get to enjoy. Supporting characters enter and exit conveniently without adding interest. But the worst part is that the heroine, who I was really rooting for, is such a doormat! And because she lets herself get bossed around and criticized without making objection, the hero turns into a jerk too. Even as an independent woman, she exercises zero independence. All in all, I wish McNare would scrape this version and start again because this could have been a great story!

3.0 out of 5 stars Most unusual first meeting circumstances! November 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Regency romance, evil first husband, virgin heroine who would do anything for her family, rich, sensitive, caring kidnapped hero/lover, secret baby, second chance at love. This book has all the aforementioned, but it didn't really hold my attention, in fact I employed speed reading so I was able to finish it quickly! It's only my opinion, for I believe the language used does not fit the English Regency time period and so my reading enjoyment is diminished as a result. I like my historical romances to 'feel' like they were written during the time period the book was set in. The English is 'too American' for the story's location and its English characters.

"Blinded by her tantalizing beauty and deceptively innocent charm, he might never have discovered what a cruel, heartless bitch lurked beneath that disingenuous façade. Lies, all lies. Those same three words reverberated in his head again and again, like the relentless beating of the drum. As much as he hated to acknowledge it, it hurt even more than he could have thought possible."
