Bittersweet and Beautiful,
By
This review is from: Dreaming of You (Audio CD)
Selena's last album is a tragic tribute to a magnificent talent, a painful vision of what would have been had she lived, and evidence of just how much the music world lost when she was taken from us. Her rich, sweet voice paints a picture of dreams realized and snatched away with the haunting "Dreaming of You" and "I Could Fall in Love." Even non-Spanish speakers can enjoy the happy rhythm of her Tejano classics. Selena will forever live on through her music and in the hearts of generations to come with this classic CD. Adios, Selena. We miss you.

Dreaming Of You 20 Years Of Music Limited Edition,
By "dvdcollector18" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dreaming of You (Audio CD)
This re-issue of Selena's record breaking #1 Billboard Hit has been completely remastered to give it a sound that goes beyond it's original state. All of her breakthrough English hits such as Dreaming Of You and I Could Fall In Love are here, with her revamped Spanish classics ("Amor Prohibido" and "Como La Flor") and some powerful mariachi offerings: El Toro Relajo and Tu Solo Tu.It is amazing to think that she was able to bring this Latin masterpiece to #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts. To this day this is the only predominately Spanish album to ever debut @ #1. In addition, this Special Limited Edition re-issue includes: introduction text not found in the original version, Dreaming Of You Music Video for the computer, and Spoken Liner Notes by her father, sister, brother and other band members. These notes are terrific to listen to with loads of tidbits including A.B. advising Selena at first NOT to record the title track, and Selena and his memorable encounter with Wynona Judd!!...It is definatley worth the re-purchase if you have the original or to purchase for the first time to discover Selena's versatile talent.

A Must Have,
By Ryan (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dreaming of You (Audio CD)
This CD is a must have, sadly Selena's life was cut short before the CD was finished but the 5 new tracks she left us with are a tragic prediction of how well she would have been.
"I Could Fall In Love" An amazing vocal input by Selena. A catchy beat about a woman falling in love with a man already in a relationship. 10/10 "Captive Heart" Sounds almost 80ish, great song. 9/10 "I'm Getting Used To You" Written by Diane Warren, it's a great song although the video they made without Selena was horrible. 10/10 "Gods Child" A Spanish/English song I enjoyed it 8/10 "Dreaming Of You" This is what the album is all about, this is the best song Selena ever recorded in my opinion, also one of the best love songs of all times, I must have listened to this song 10,000 times it never gets old. I'm glad Selena insisted against her label to record this track for her album. This showcases her amazing vocals and ability to go from low to high at a snap of the fingers. 10/10 "Missing My Baby" A soulful song which showcases all of Selena's range, reminds me of something Mariah Carey might record. 10/10 "Amor Prohibido" (Forbidden Love) A fun song that will have even non-spanish speakers dancing, the song is supposed to be about Selena's Grandparents who fell in love although one was poor and one was rich. 9/10 "Wherever You Are" A recording in Spanish and English with the Barrio Boys, Selena's vocals should be displayed more in the track the Barrio Boys are more dominant in it. Good song though 7/10 "Techno Cumbia" Selena does a rap in this which I find very good showcasing her range as an artist, a very fun song. 10/10 "El Toro Relajo" This is a salsa track Selena recorded for the movie Don Juan DeMarco, shows Selena's ability to do any genre of music, I'm not a fan of the genre but Selena livens up the song. 7/10 "Como La Flor" This song was Selena's first Spanish hit, meaning "Like The Flower" in English. 7/10 "Tu Solo Tu" Another track which was recorded for the Don Juan Demarco movie 6.5/10 "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" A very fun song that Selena wrote you'll find yourself dancing throughout it, it's about a girls beating heart whose in love. 10/10 I don't speak Spanish I'm not a fan of Spanish music but Selena has that appeal that makes her Spanish music interesting and fun. The English and Spanish tracks are equally delightful.

Selena was in fact on her way to being a huge star in the English market.I Could Fall In Love and Dreaming Of You still remain 2 of my favorite songs of all time.Other highlights to the album include Missing My Baby,Captive Heart, and I'm Getting Used To You.....Also with album being released a few months after her death....She was the first latin artist to have an album debut #1 on the American charts and also selling over 4 million copies....Her dream had finally come true....I Could Fall In Love was the first single and it made the Top 10.....Make sure you pick up a copy of this album

A Wonderful Legacy of a Great Star Of latin music,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dreaming of You (Audio CD)
A few months ago I bought this album and what can I say it's very terrific. I first heard of Selena from my grandmother who loved Selena and I often listened to this album to improve my Spanish and now I know some of Selena's songs in Spanish. Dreaming of you is a wonderful collection of hits from the late Latin Diva. There are three English songs I could fall in love captive heart and i'm getting used to you that were originally supposed to be on Selena's first English album on SBK records that she recorded before her farewell. There is also wherever you are a English version of her Spanish hit Dondequera Que Estes and features Latin pop sensations Barrio Boyzz. Also featured is a new version of Missing My Baby which features Full Force {of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam fame} God's Child {Baila Commigo} which features Selena dueting with rock singer David Byrne and A boy like that from the West Side Story { the new version} Soundtrack. Last but not least is the Disneyish title track which is simply beautiful. In my eyes Selena would have made it big if she were here but she leaves us with a wonderful collection. Buy it if you can,IN MEMORY OF SELENA {1971-1995} ...

Selena had true talent,
By GlitterJ (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dreaming of You (Audio CD)
Selena, like many others say had true emotion in her voice. I just bought the Dreaming of You cd the last one in my record store. Even thought it was more then i usually paid i had 2 get it. I knew of Selena before her death, but didnt start to love her music until a year later. The movie was very touching, and i got the soundtrack from a friend. It's sad to know that most of the female singers out there, don't have the emotion that she had. But Selena will live on with her fans, i know i still consider her a idol for me in singing. I bet she's smiling down, knowing that she did accomploish something. Selena should of been a live to see her success.

Selena: dreaming of you,
By Amanda (Palmdale, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dreaming of You (Audio CD)
Whether it's the upbeat Latino rhythm or the awesome vocals by Selena, this CD is a definite winner. Through the thirteen tracks you will be swept away to a little bit of Mexico by the truly unique mix of Spanish and English. Starting with the Spanish classic, "Amor Prohibido", with the light tempo and the tale of a modern day Romeo and Juliet that is beautiful and heart wrenching. Or the sad sweet romantic tale in English about a young girls first true love, whose story is almost parallel to that of Selena's love life. Although Selena knew very little Spanish, after her first press conference for the CD into the Anglo market, which she achieved with "Dreaming of you". Which is still the only primarily Spanish album to debut as number one on the Billboard Pop Charts. Although Selena was killed by an ex-employee in 1995 she will always be remembered for her incredible vocals and unwavering dreams for this CD.

A sample of all her music styles...,
By "amaris-raine" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dreaming of You (Audio CD)
There are a small number of artists who I love enough to go out and buy their CD's as soon as they come out. Selena is one of them, and this is the first CD of hers I bought days after it was released. I was still new to her music, but from the start knew that I loved her! Dreaming Of You is a small sample of what would've been had she lived and made it big in the English market, (which she would have!) "I Could Fall In Love," "Captive Heart" & "I'm Getting Used To You" are the original English songs. "God's Child (Baila Conmigo)" & "Wherever You Are (Dondequiera Que Estes)" are duets w/ David Byrne & The Barrio Boyzz. "Missing My Baby" is a re-make of the Entre A Mi Mundo hit (which I prefer more over this version, but both are excellent!) "El Toro Relajo" & "Tu, Solo Tu" are the rancheras, and of course her cumbia hits can be found on "Amor Prohibido," "Techno Cumbia," "Como La Flor," & "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom." All skillfully re-done. This CD has a good Latin, pop and r&b flavor. It displays Selena's potential. She had a great personality and would've been a huge star!

A TESTAMENT TO SELENA'S DREAMS,
By
This review is from: Dreaming of You (Audio CD)
Not many albums completely encompass a singer's full potential or talent, and "Dreaming Of You" is an exception. Selena's final English recordings are a brilliant testament to what might have been, what should have been. Abraham Quantinilla, as we all know, is a brilliant man (and a brilliant sales-man), and when he put this record together he did so with great care. Along with such Selena classics as "Dreaming of You" and "I Could Fall In Love", he remastered and remixed some of her old tracks to make them more accessible to a new generation. With such firey songs as "Captive Heart" and "Techno Cumbia", he mixes in light hearted love songs such as "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" and "Missing My Baby". He covers Selena's entire heart-felt range from sugary love ballads, up-tempo cumbias, the classica, to tearful mariachi's, really showcasing Selena's vocal talent. One of the most striking tracks, "God's Child", is both haunting and melodic as Selena's searing vocals soar next to David Baird's enthusiastic guitar and gritty voice. While the new Spanglish version of "wherever you are" just seems to be clever re-packaging, it feels kind of empty knowing it was re-recorded without the help of Selena.

"I could never get used to living without you",
By Mikeisha Best (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dreaming of You (Audio CD)
After seeing the touching biopic of her life, I was interested in learning more about Selena. I read books on her, read biographies about her on the internet, saw interviews on YouTube, and, of course, listened to her music. "Dreaming of You" was one of the first albums by Selena that I purchased and I listened to it repeatedly. Did I listen to her music because I felt obligated to because she was killed? Yes and no. I felt such remorse after seeing the movie, but when I listen to her music, I truly enjoy it a whole lot. This chanteuse had a lot of personality in her voice, not to mention, she helped an "A" in Spanish! There are a few ballads, mid-tempos, and even some up-beat numbers here. She was chiefly a Tejano artist, but there are many tinges of R&B on this album. It's not hard to tell that Jennifer Lopez was heavily influenced by her.
The song "Dreaming of You" is terrific, but, somewhat eerie and haunting. This may be because they played this song in the movie just before she was murdered. The song is about having a huge crush on a male and thinking about him so much that he shows up in your dreams. The chorus, versus, lyrics, delivery and production are all stellar; this song never really gets old. "I Could Fall in Love" is also a nice song with a relaxing feel. It has hints of the Mexican sound, but there is also a large R&B influence on this mid-tempo. "Captive Heart", "I'm Getting Used to You", and "Wherever You Are" are also standout tracks. These songs are up-tempo and will have you dancing and bobbing your head uncontrollably. I absolutely love "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom!" This song is sung in Spanish, but I know all the lyrics and the complete translation! It is a very cute song and a nice way to end a great album. Some of the material here isn't that memorable. Tracks such as "Tu Solo Tu", "God's Child", and "El Toro Relajo" are decent, but far from great. Selena did a wonderful job with "Dreaming of You." If you decide to buy it, it will get its share of play time in your CD player. Worth the money. 4 stars. Mikeisha's Top 5 1. "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" 2. "Dreaming of You" 3. "Missing My Baby" 4. "Como la Flor" 5. "Wherever You Are" |
