5.0 out of 5 stars Chock full of memorable club hits anchored (anonymously) by the robust Martha Wash
One of the strongest and best known dance albums of the early 90s, thanks, in largely unheralded part, to the windstorm-inducing singing of Martha Wash, who blows things away with the huge club hits "Strike It Up", "Everybody Everybody", and "I Don't Know Anybody Else." There's also some guesting here by Salsoul disco diva Loleatta Holloway. And when you and your lover...

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than your average dance album
Dance pop: Usually you get about 2 great hit tracks and a whole bunch of boring filler you never listen to. Not the case with this one. Sure, you'll know the big hits "Everybody Everybody", "I Don't Know Anybody Else" and "Strike it Up", but there's some others worth your time here, too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than your average dance album, April 18, 2005
This review is from: Dreamland (Audio CD)
Dance pop: Usually you get about 2 great hit tracks and a whole bunch of boring filler you never listen to. Not the case with this one. Sure, you'll know the big hits "Everybody Everybody", "I Don't Know Anybody Else" and "Strike it Up", but there's some others worth your time here, too.

HIGHLIGHTS:
"Everybody Everybody" appears in the Top 40 single edit here, along with Martha Wash's orgasmic wailing opening for "I Don't Know Anybody Else". "Fantasy", a 'go after your dreams' number, is surprisingly solid and probably could have been a single. The Brand New Heavies' Loleatta Holloway guests on the sizzling "Ride on Time". The midtempo throb of "Hold On"'s "Co-caine..co-caine...to go straight to your brain" will also embed itself. Final single "Strike it Up" is another good one with Wash tearing it up on vocals and a rap that doesn't sound horribly out of date (unlike, say "Ya Kid K" does these days...)

LOW POINTS:
The title track is a dull instrumental...you'll never really turn to it on purpose. "Open Your Eyes" is also a bit of a snoozer. "Ghost Box" sounds like a Kenny G outtake. It's completely out of place here and I'm not sure what producer "Groove Groove Melody" was thinking other than possibly "Gee..I've only got 8 songs so far. I better put at least ONE more on there or people will think it's a rip-off."

BOTTOM LINE:
Even with the short run time, it's one of the better dance CDs I've heard and I still pull it out from time to time. For a genre with usually little longevity, this one continues to sound pretty good. Recommended.

There's also some guesting here by Salsoul disco diva Loleatta Holloway. And when you and your lover get tired of dancing your butts off to the above mentioned hits, head off to a little place where the two of you can be alone, and chill to the soothing sounds of the sublime instrumental "Ghost Box."

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Dance, November 21, 2011
This review is from: Dreamland (Audio CD)
Great vocals (if you're interested, read the story of how the vocalist got stiffed on credits), big dance songs ("Everybody, Everybody", "I Don't Know Anybody Else", "Ride On Time", "Strike It Up"), some really good tunes, and a couple of downbeat ethereal soundscapes.

Dreamland is a classic album for fans of dance music and is still a great listen after all these years. It is a perfect example of an album compared to a set of songs. You'll see other reviews saying some songs don't fit but to me it's about letting you rest before the next big lift. The big songs "Everybody, Everybody" and "IDKAE" lead the album then both "Ride on Time" and "Strike It Up" are preceeded by very mellow loungy tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dance back into the nineties, January 9, 2011

This CD has strong memories for me because it was the first one that I ever owned. It is a hallmark dance cd that received heavy club play for songs like Everybody,Everybody and Strike It Up. Other great songs include Ride On Time and I Don't Know Anybody Else. The only song that doesn't make sense is Ghost Box, which is a much slower tempo than the rest. If you're looking to transport back into the early 90's dance phase this cd is a must have.

This is a classic early-'90s dance music album. Every song on it is good. I had it on cassette tape and when I saw the album for $5 I had to have it. Now it's time to bust-a-move!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pitfalls for excellent music, May 31, 2011
This review is from: Dreamland (Audio CD)
Ha! This is where Music started to go down into a big hole (and it has bounced back, believe me! (why believe you Tnahpellee?). A great looking person on the cover who probably doesn't add any vocals to it, usually wearing next to nothing, and followed by a litany of allegations, lawsuits and samples.

However, the music here is really good, even if you don't really know who is singing the songs! Whoever belts out 'Fantasy' just belted out one of the best soul songs of the 90's! So powerful, surreal, well 'dreamy'. The techno songs are pretty good with soulful singing throughout but could have been better if they provided the originals rather than the remixes of tracks like 'Everybody everybody'. And then there's a couple of easy-listening instrumentals that, at the very least, provide a change of pace.

So, if you like techno-dance/pop-house music with a festival mood and like unrelated supermodels on the front cover, then, by all means, check it out. Rating ***

The CD I purchased came in a very short time. Although the case was cracked to the CD the CD played without a problem. I was very pleased with the service.
