4.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful 'Dreamland Express' Indeed!
Pay no attention to the reviews of those below mine from St. Louis, MO and from South Carolina. They do not know what they are talking about. Snare drum or no snare drum, this is one of Mr. Denver's finest moments. This is a mature John Denver with some of the most stirring songs, arrangements and lyrics of John's career. He could not stay Mr. Rocky Mountain High forever...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Denver's finest hour
I really like John Denver, but I HATE this record.By 1985,when MTV, Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie's dance-flavoured music ruled the airwaves, and John's record sales were waning, you can tell some bean counter or wunderkinder record producer at RCA/BMG thought "I know! Let's give him a more 'modern' sound and image! We'll even put him in a sexy video! The kids will love...

He could not stay Mr. Rocky Mountain High forever. Even John Denver had to grow up; and grow up musically and spiritually he did. If only we still had him with us to record more wonderful albums such as this one. "Don't Close Your Eyes Tonight" is a standout track on this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dear John at his best, a nice way to remember him, May 14, 1999

I love all of John's music and have 28 of his albums, but Dreamland Express is one of my particular favourites. Some of the songs on this seem to have a haunting beauty, like so much of his music...I love it

4.0 out of 5 stars It helped to bring me back, January 20, 2002
This review is from: Dreamland Express (Audio CD)
Having bought JD's albums since 1972 I had a lull - if I got bored or not I have no idea, he just did not seem to fit anymore. So I missed some releases. This was one, but when I heard it I regreted missing it - the music is rarely spectacular but it is very warm and engaging. Now the CD is a regular on my play list simply because it makes me feel good. And it generated my interest in his other late period releases. It is too easy to be critical as it set no real hights, but there are no lows either. It covers a variety of styles (Doo Wop as well) but remains JD - try it and you won't be sorry - except that you didn't hear it sooner.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Real Kick*, October 13, 2003

Listening to John Denvers' Folklore-Ballads is one unique experience, but playing this CD is an experience.
From the mundane pure mountain style, to the 'Rich in Spirit', this
high level energy music seems to be a real gusher.
It is a twist and a kick of musical relationships between society and lovers.
Each word is written with John Denvers vivacious color coded notes.
~It is exciting and yet serious. I enjoy this tremendously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of all John Denver's works, this one is the most personal., August 2, 1998

This CD is well worth the money for any fan of John Denver music. Although it is not classic Denver, it is moving, sensitive and a gentle way to remember this fantastic artist & his musical talents.

The kids will love it!" So rather than the acoustic folk/rock sound & bittersweet self-penned paens to nature and romantic love than characterised his usual style, here John goes thru' the motions of singing works by others that include soul,R & B and even a disco song! It's an ill fit,and although vocally and artistically he does his best(the soaring falsetto vocals on 'If I Ever" being particularly fine)his heart simply isn't in it.The exception is 'African Sunrise'the only original Denver tune on the LP,a song written while the singer spent time in Ethiopia for the Hunger Project, and the only one that he sounds truly 'at home' on.If you'd like to seek out Denver's music,I'd recommend my favorite Denver albums"I Want to Live" and 'Windsong"-full of beautiful melodies and lush orchestration & much more indicative of the true talent of the man. This album is an unfortunate abherration from an impressive body of work from a lovely singer-songwriter.When he was on form though, nobody could beat him as a showman and songwriter. There was no one else quite like him and like many,I miss him.

This Cd is John Denver in a new phase of life with a different type of song, a little more sexy perhaps?
I really enjoy this Cd, very easy to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars dreamland express - great expression, August 15, 2008
This review is from: Dreamland Express (Audio CD)
Being only 10 years younger as John Denver, I grew up with his music. I have rediscovered his incredible music, lyrics and songs after watching a PBS special. This cd is another brilliant side of him. We all remember him as the good ole boy, but here is an extremely mature full bodied voice of an incredible song writer! Some of the songs are ok, others are from another, deeper, side of him. Listen to his voice, it is truly rich..............
