Don't expect it to be too "erotic",
This review is from: Dreammaster: The Erotic Invader (DVD)
There were some really hot movies that came out in 1996 (Femalien, anyone?). This is not one of them.
There are some sexy scenes in this but trumpeting it as "unrated" creates a false perception...namely, that you'll be getting explicit nudity and explicit simulated sex. Instead the "unrated" likely is more of a reflection of 1) the masculine near-nudity and 2) the adult themes. There are some pretty graphic themes here that are strong by R-rated standards. As for the feminine nudity, that is incredibly disappointing. Nothing frontal below the waist whatsoever. Only very brief nudity from the back. Every woman pictured is really hot (Lisa Boyle--here credited as "Cassandra Leigh"--actually is the least attractive), but we don't get a good idea of it because everything is shot with this kind of gothic, film noir kind of look. Way too dark and moody with an overabundance of shadows. The writing and actually are pretty strong. The plot setup is very interesting, about as good as you'll find in a movie of this genre. Patrick Ahern (Grant, the lead character...a psychologist who is studying dreams) is really superb in his role...very impressive. The scorchingly-fine Patricia Skeriotis has a great turn as Devora the dream witch. But let's face it: You don't watch movies in the erotic genre for plot or acting. So on that point, this is a two-star production. It gets three simply because of the plot and the acting. I don't recommend a buy. |
