Editorial Reviews

Review

Joyfully exploring consciousness, lucid dreaming and Buddhism, Charlie Morley gently stretches the reader's mind to accept dream yoga's premise of real awakening. I recommend this for everyone on the lucid dreaming path. -- Robert Waggoner, author of Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self I have done joint workshops with Charlie and consider him to be the most authentic practitioner of lucid dreaming teaching in Europe. He has been lucid dreaming since he was a teenager and has developed both a practical and theoretical understanding of this subject, which I consider to be unique. -- Prof Rob Nairn, author of Living Dreaming, Dying His clarity, humility and humanity make it easier for people to understand this deep and important subject of lucid dreaming. -- Lama Yeshe Rinpoche, author of Living Dharma This is an exciting book by a brilliant young teacher that will enthral all those fascinated by the possibility of both lucid dreaming and lucid living. -- Tim Freke, author of Lucid Living and The Mystery Experience Through our collaborations together, I have to say that Charlie is proof of evolution. He's the next generation, sharp of mind and sweet of heart. He's like a DJ mixing old and new to create a practice that's relevant, useful and most importantly, one that works. I wholeheartedly recommend his book. He's the real thing. -- Ya'Acov Darling Khan, co-author of Movement Medicine: How to Awaken, Dance and Live your Dreams This exciting book by a brilliant young teacher will enthral all those fascinated by the possibility of both lucid dreaming and lucid living. -- Tim Freke, author of Lucid Living and The Mystery Experience Charlie is able to make lucid dreaming cool, fresh and relevant to anyone, and crucially he makes the process easy to understand. As a hypnotherapist, I can see that he writes from his heart with no hidden agendas, which is a very refreshing approach. -- Valerie Austin author of Self Hypnosis: A Step-by-Step Guide to Improving Your Life Less sleep but more fun and more refreshed? Sounds like a dream to us. Red magazine Charlie Morley isn't your average gentle Buddhist. The Scottish Sun

About the Author

Charlie Morley has been lucid dreaming since his teens and at the age of 25 became one of the first Westerners officially "authorised to teach" lucid dreaming practice within the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. This offers him a unique insight into lucid dreaming and a rare ability to synthesise both Western and Eastern perspectives on lucidity. www.charliemorley.com

Charlie has crafted a book that speaks about lucid dreaming on many levels.

The HOW-TO section offers the level of instruction that novices need, while serving up novel approaches for those already active in their exploration.

He gives accurate current information on the brain/body science of what is happening when we are conscious in the unconscious process of dreaming.

There is context given as to how the pursuit of lucid dreaming can fit within a spiritual path.

Historically he discusses the lineage of lucid dreaming, offering an in-depth look at how it is woven into Tibetan Buddhism, as well as a review of the modern pioneers of this phenomenon.

There is a frank discussion of the confusion that arises between Out of Body Experiences and Lucid Dreaming.

And for those who want to feed their mind just before bed on stories of lucid dreaming experiences, Charlie offers some fascinating accounts of his nocturnal adventures.

Having been intimately involved in the study of lucid dreaming back in the early days, as recounted in my own book, I can assure you that Charlie Morley knows his stuff. His writing is accessible, passionate and effective. An authentic lucid dreamer and born teacher.

All in all, a delicious and nourishing feast with something for everyone's taste and appetite.

Long review title, but says it all. Charlie Morley's authorial voice brings lucidity to the realm of possibility for those who have never experienced it, and makes the whole project seem both possible and worth doing. Morley writes from a Buddhist perspective, so his approach to dreams is also ethical ("Don't create negative karma in dreams--you're forming habits that make it easier to do these things in waking life"), which I think is great. Very often lucid dreamers are looking for an escape so they can behave badly while they sleep. Let's start being good in our dreams!

Morley intersperses his writing with little chunks of text titled "Charlie Says" and "Let's [activity you'll be practicing]." The first shows us that this guy is totally human, has had lots of experiences, and is ready for us to have them as well. The second makes becoming lucid seem attainable. For walking meditation, his caption reads, "Let's walk!" For sitting meditation, it says, "Let's do nothing!" For WBTB (Wake Back to Bed), it read, "Let's wake up and go back to bed!" These are humorous, but the techniques that follow are solid and useful for any level of practice.

There is also a top ten section of activities to perform once you become lucid. Surprisingly, coitus is nowhere listed as an appropriate activity! However, there are cool ones like integrating the shadow, spiritual practice, walking through walls, and the like. Great techniques, great guy. Excellent book.

I had the privilege of attending one of the author's workshop, so my response is a bit biased by the experience, as well as what I learned from the book and was able to put into practice. Before the workshop and reading this book, I had an interest in the subject matter and practice, mostly through the usual channels, as well as reading Stephen LeBerge's book, as well Robert Waggoner's book, both superb introductions to the subject matter. Yet, after making some muddled attempts at following the suggestion located throughout various chapters in those books, as well as exploring some similar suggestions online, I never could achieve much lucidity in my dreaming state, and in fact, began to doubt I ever would. My interest in the phenomenon waned until I took Charlie's two day workshop. The workshop was excellent and brought a lot of information about the phenomenon and practice. Afterwards, though, I still could not achieve lucidity, despite a whole new set of tools and some fresh momentum (I did, however, learn a lot about how I approach sleeping and dreaming, which was having some immediate beneficial effects.) After I started reading the book, though, I managed to have some success with gaining awareness in my dreams, and so, despite much of the material in the book covered in the workshop, even if you have taken the workshop, the book adds much more value and should not be overlooked as a good resource for learning this skill. It is a simple book, a quick read, with clear and concise language. Despite being within the self-help/spirituality vein, it does not get overtly preachy or sappy (though it does come close, but that reflects the author's approach, more than anything else.Read more ›

What does it mean to be "lucid"? In this rich and inspiring book, Charlie Morley offers much more than practical tips and techniques for how we can all begin to awaken within our dreams. He clearly articulates and encourages the reader to grasp the bigger picture: that these insights into dreams, reality, and consciousness are not meant to stay in the "dream world" but are meant to be applied to our lives here and now. It is by waking up to the present moment of our lives that we can begin to turn this unconscious dream we call life into a lucid dream. Charlie outlines with an open heart exactly how one can experience what it truly means to be "awake". Highly recommend this book and anything else this brilliant man creates!
