TOTALLY worth the extra bucks,

Norther's debut, 'Dreams of Endless War,' was released in 2002. Ultimately, the look of this band might make you look at them like they're a Children of Bodom clone. This is not so. Though both bands are from Finland, both are melodic death crews, and both are quintets made up in the same way (singer/guitarist, guitarist, bassist, keyboard vrituoso, drummer), they each have peronsalities reflected in their sounds that make them unique. Both bands really can play, which is certainly not something you see in a majority of the younger metal bands out there today. I must say, the addition of the cover of classic hair metal anthem "The Final Countdown" (originally done by Europe) adds an interesting touch to an already teriffic melodic death CD. COB fans, rejoice, this is not a clone, it is merely a close cousin, and an equally talented one at that.

This cd rocks, yes, what people say may be true about them sounding like children of bodom, yet to me norther seems less cheesier more serious sound. i would like to compare to kalmah, but even they are yet more rough.
all great bands i'll never take that away from any of them... but this norther album is my favorite along with the "death unlimited" simply awesome, pretty quick and flows well with the keyboard solos with guitar solos and rhythms as a whole and drums throughout the cd...keyboard playing is inmense i feel i like norther better than bodom in my opinion...kalmah is first though. i love the story line this album follows too, all songs seem to connect and as you listen and understand the lyrics the music flows through you its just a great album oh and the voice is just as great too....perfect work. Try them out id start with this particular album and Death unlimited too you wont be dissapointed.............

I never heard of these guys until a few days ago but I must admit, as a die hard Children Of Bodom fan, I automatically fell in love with this band. This album is the album I hoped the last Bodom album would sound like. I was sort of disappointed with HCDR but Norther have the same sound as Bodoms Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper. It would be to compare Soilwork to In Flames as Norther to Bodom. Any Bodom fan would really enjoy these guys.

Dreams of Endless War is the first album from Norther, and to some extent I think their inexperience shows through on this album, more so than on any of the three that would follow. They are often labeled a Children of Bodom copycat and, while I don't think this is true, their sound is the most "Bodom-like" on this album, without a doubt. The intro to "Endless War," for example, sounds very much like something Bodom might have featured on an album. As I've never been a big power metal fan, this album tends to be my least favorite, from Norther, as it features the most prevalent synthesizer playing of all their albums (again, in Bodom fashion), which tends to be common in a lot of Scandinavian power metal. Despite this fact, this album is still a fierce offering of melodic death metal, tinged with power metal. Vocals are very well done, which is one area where I always felt that Norther was clearly Bodom's superior, and guitar work is tight. A strong debut, and one they would improve on.

Amazing release from a previously unknown band!,

I never heard of this band until somehow linked to this page on Amazon, and man am I ecstatic or what! Norther are an amazing band. The greatest strength of this band lies in the combination of its sick and I mean SICK lead guitar melodies intertwined with the insane keyboard licks. Children of Bodom? I wouldn't actually UNDERRATE this band by comparing them to COB. I'd say more like Finland's version of Dark Tranquillity, with less rock/death/big riffs and more black atmosphere. The songwriting here is magnificant as is the musicianship. The only thing that can be improved upon is the production, which seems inferior to Amorphis and Sentenced, two big Finnish metal bands.
5 out of 5 for the pure fact that I had never heard of this band before, and I have now, and am completely BLOWN AWAY. Two words: GET IT! |
