Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Person declares that madly romantic, passionate love is no delusion, as Freud held, but a valid experience and an agent for personal growth. "Marred by a wordy, repetitious style and overstuffed with examples from literature, movies and personal histories, Person's investigation nevertheless offers clinical guidance for those happily or unhappily in love," noted PW. Author tour.

Review
"Encompassing the subtle blending of infinite shades and hues from the palates of emotion and cognition, romantic love is a seminal force that shapes the human condition. Behavioral scholars have, nonetheless, eschewed intensive study of romantic love - largely because of its inherent complexity and innate elusiveness. Encountering this breach with the passion, creativity, and transcendence that mirrors romantic love, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Ethel Person has crafted a pioneering work that provides luminous and illuminating insights and conceptual coherence to the subject. I whole-heartedly recommend Dreams of Romantic Love and Fateful Encounters as a unique and indispensable resource for mental health practitioners of all stripes (including my fellow neuropsychiatrists) and for the patients and families whom we serve." - Stuart C. Yudofsky, M.D., D.C. and Irene Ellwood Professor and Chair, The Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas"

5.0 out of 5 stars So insightful that it takes numerous readings to process, December 4, 1996
By A Customer
In the era of self-help, many have tried to write of love romance, & sex. None succeed to the extent that Person has in this fine text. By identifying romance as an act of imagination, a quintessentially psychological act, Person delivers the insights that can enable the cognitively oriented lover to achieve transcendence while keeping one's feet on solid ground.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ethel Person guides us in the truths of love, May 25, 1998
By A Customer
A masterful treatise about the mysteries of romantic love. Person shares her insights through personal anecdotes and use of illustrations from novels and films. A joy to read as you experience the pleasures -- and especially, the pains -- of romantic love. I highly recommend this book to the more non-judgmental reader who is looking for more than just a self-help, quick fix to solve the problems of love. Something to explore time and time again, and to find new truths in with each new love you encounter.
