A Dark, Poetic Jewel, January 16, 2000
This review is from: Dreams of Lovecraftian Horror (Paperback)
"Dreams" has been a sheer delight to read. Skilfully crafted tales with plenty of moody atmosphere and vivid locales whether it is Lovecraft's own witch-haunted Arkham or Pugmire's own genius loci of otherworldliness, Sesqua Valley. Pugmire's voice is distinctly unique as is his style of writing: precise, emotionally taut and with an all-pervading spirit of melancholy. The characters are mirrors of the alien presence that infuses the tales and gives them their tone of despair. Illustrations by author/artist Stanley C. Sargent perfectly complement the writing and add to the overall effect of the volume. I was impressed with all the tales, but the one that stands out especially is "The Totem Pole" a masterpiece of prose-stylist art. Pugmire's subtle use of the Mythos is wonderful and expert, not allowing the tales to become bogged down with too much detail. He allows the mood to carry you and it does so with elegant understatement - this book is a must for any fan of dark literature.

New expanded version forthcoming, April 9, 2009
This review is from: Dreams of Lovecraftian Horror (Paperback)
This is a very short book -- 90 pages of large typeface. The stories are, mostly, my early work and to be quite honest they aren't very good. I've been told that I am too harsh a critic of this book. However, I have recently completed work on a revised/expanded edition, in which all of the stories have been completely revised and/or utterly rewritten, and a number of other old tales have been added to the contents. I have also, for this new edition (which will be published at some future date by Mythos Books) written a new 10,000 word prose poem sequence, "Uncommon Places," with each separate segment inspired by some entry or entries in H. P. Lovecraft's "Commonplace Book." I suggest, if you want this book, to wait until the newer edition is published.
UPDATE, 1 April 1711
This book continues to be delayed, but I am now return'd to writing new things for it, including two new tales set in Sesqua Valley and a new prose-poem sequence of 20,000 words, "Unhallowed Places," with each segment inspir'd by Lovecraft's tales and commonplace book. "Uncommon Places" will not be in the book (unless my publisher puts in the old version without my knowing it), as I had to include it in my new hardcover from Centipede Press, THE TANGLED MUSE, whut was short on wordage. An expanded version of that work will serve as the title piece for my next book from Hippocampus Press, UNCOMMON PLACES, to be publish'd next year. I am spending the next few months finalizing the contents for this new and expanded edition of DREAMS OF LOVECRAFTIAN HORROR, and I think it will be a book that Lovecraftians will enjoy.
My next book will be SOME UNKNOWN GULF OF NIGHT, from Arcane Wisdom, appearing this summer as limited edition hardcover (the hardcover is already half sold out on pre-order at Horror Mall). It is a prose-poem sequence of 37,000 words, with each segment inspired by one of ye sonnets from Lovecraft's FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH.
And this October of 2011 will see my first collection from Miskatonic River Press, THE STRANGE DARK ONE--TALES OF NYARLATHOTEP. The amazing cover illustration may be viewed on my blog, A View from Sesqua Valley.
