4.0 out of 5 stars Misguiding title - still a ROYO!
As my title says, the imagery has very little to do with Dreams. It contains quite a few Native American themes - the Wild West. This is mixed with futuristic scenes, aliens, spaceships and naked ladies with weapons as usual. My point is: it is hard to title this book - or maybe I'd call it: "From the Wild West to the Strange Future"... Still it's Royo. He is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Dreams or a Nightmare?
Loving Luis Royo's art & his fascinating scenarios I'm quick to buy all of his books. This book really didn't have what I expected to find, but there were some plusses. Loving Luis Royo's art & his fascinating scenarios I'm quick to buy all of his books. This book really didn't have what I expected to find, but there were some plusses. It seems that most of the work in this book is from a collection of Royo's work over the years & not a whole lot of new. What I found that was a plus about the book are some of the step by step techniques behind his creation of a painting & a few paintings that caught my eye including the cover piece. If you're a fan of Royo, add it to your collection. If you just discovered Royo, start with Malefic, Secrets, or Third Millennium.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dream, December 31, 1999

well I have to be the biggest luis royo fan but this book was a huge disappointment. the best images in this book are the front cover and back cover... but thoose images arent represented inside the book... inside you will find mostly chessy book cover work and my main gripe is many of the images are so tiny... if you're new to luis royo I say check out malefic and secrets.. if you're a big fan.. I guess you would still want to get this.. but give it a look at your local bookstore to make sure you want it

My point is: it is hard to title this book - or maybe I'd call it: "From the Wild West to the Strange Future"... Still it's Royo. He is one of the best in fantasy art. Compared with other artists this book would get 5 stars - compared with his other books it got only 4. So if you are not as a big a fan of Royo as me - only 'sort of' like him - then pick another of his books. (See my reviews for them...)

4.0 out of 5 stars Babes in dreamland, April 22, 2007
This review is from: Dreams (Paperback)
Royo is, more than anything else, a pinup artist. His best and best-known work features gorgeous models in varying degrees of removal from exotic costumes and lingerie. Plenty of that work appears here, in settings drawn from adventure and romance, SF and fantasy, and a range of other genres. Male figures are well done, of course, but lack the passion of his illustrations of female figures.

Beyond his wonderful finished work, Royo also presents some of his preliminary sketches, drawings, and sequences showing the development of a single image. The text describes his materials if not his whole process, and I found it surprising - pencil sketches, development in arcylic and tempera, and finishes in oil. I found the text weak, seeming to wander in and out of metaphors mixed unsuccessfully. No matter, I wasn't here for the text. Royo is about his imagery, and this collection presents a spectacular range of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another success for Royo, December 7, 1999
This review is from: Dreams (Paperback)
As a Royo fan, I look forward to each release of his new works. Dreams was worth the wait. In this latest collection, he shows finished pieces that appeared as sketches in previous books. If you love Royo's work, you will love Dreams. A must have for collectors of his work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, diverse work, September 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dreams (Paperback)
This book is anything other than pin-up as a whole (some of Royo's works fall under the pin-up category, though). Well, there are a few pieces of pin-up in the whole book but they are limited to maybe 4 pages, and there are another two pages making fun of the genre. Instead this is a diverse trip through Royo's fantasy artwork, whether it is Wild West, Sci-Fi, sword-and-sorcery, or the like. We are treated to dream after dream.

The dominant theme of this volume is that of the landscape or other background. The backgrounds often are front and center with the human characters taking equal priority. While Royo seems more comfortable drawing women, some of the drawings of men are quite well done here as well. People looking for pin-up art should look elsewhere, but those looking for wide ranging portraits of a true master should look here.

Highly recommended.

After hurricane Katrina, I began rebuilding my collection of books on all types of art, including fantasy art. This is a beautiful book, and as usual, a great Amazon purchase!
