Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Legendary falsetto-voiced Earth, Wind & Fire vocalist Philip Bailey invites quite a guest list of smooth-jazz stars to this party, marking a strong adult-contemporary turn from his recent solo gospel recordings. Although Bailey never fails to keep his vocal textures front-and-center, each solid sax solo here is by another well-known star -- Everette Harp, Gerald Albright, Grover Washington Jr., and Kirk Whalum -- and guitarist Peter White and keyboardist George Duke spruce up many a harmony line. Randy Brecker even shows up, spinning his flugelhorn around the Latin-percussion textures for a bass-driven spin on Van Morrison's Moondance. When you're dealing with these kinds of voices - each distinct, and each familiar - obviously the recording's success rises and falls based on the material. Bailey mostly goes the passionate-ballad route - he also covers Bread's Make It With You and Pat Metheny's dreamy Something to Remind You - but his eager, clever, and sincere delivery help us forget that the album lacks variety. Erik Huber's vocal production, often contrasting Bailey's high notes with a lower vocal line before easing them together, is also sharp. While there's not much funk, two glorious changes of pace are Bailey's twist into Bobby Caldwell territory on the straightahead Masquerade Is Over and Are We Doing Better Now?, which sounds like classic EW&F meeting spacey, retro-soul-minded George Duke. A little more groove next time might be cool, but Bailey's still got enough of the old fire burning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful April 11, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This CD is just wonderful. It has a great mix of old and new and he is working with some of the best musicians in the business. Just the fact that he has Pat Metheny ( and is doing one of my favorites, Something to Remind Me) on this CD was enough for me to rush to get it and I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. I also LOVE the funky version of Moondance. I can't say how much I enjoy this CD. Run....Get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreams do come true!!! June 14, 1999
Format:Audio CD
After other efforts by record labels and Philip Bailey to create a solo record for fans of Bailey and EW&F, Heads Up finally delivers a knock out blow.
Dreams boasts a star studded lineup with the likes of George Duke, Grover Washington Jr., Pat Metheney, Gerald Albright, Everett Harp, Kirk Whalum, Peter White, Marcus Miller and more.
Unlike previous efforts from Bailey, this record offers a blend of smooth jazz and Bailey's R & B roots.
The CD starts off correct with a sure to be hit "Waiting for the rain". Bailey offers his interpretations of great hits like Van Morrison's "Moondance" and Bread's "Make it with You".
If you like Eric Benet, Kenny Latimore, Brian McKnight, etal... you'll love Dreams... Philip Bailey

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a Good Disc to Buy!! November 2, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
SOOO MUCH BETTER THAN THE LAST ONE! (you remember, the one one where Phil was trying to be hip-hop!) It's nice to hear someone sing nice songs...albeit, some of them are a little "hokey" did we really need to hear another version of "Masquerade.."?) Anyhow, let's thank Phillip and Dave Love of Heads UP for a disc that brings "NICE" back to soul music.
