4.0 out of 5 stars excellent, March 13, 2010
This review is from: Dreams of Tomorrow / Silhouettes (Audio CD)
Sometimes technology changes the sound of an artist's music, but not the underpinnings.

In the 1970s, Lonnie Liston Smith used analouge equipment to create a shimming space jazz, some of the best of which you can hear on Astral Traveling.

Smith's music was so glistening and keyboard based, it lent to digital sheens as the 1980s rolled around. That is what happens here: the music is a little more danceable, the bass more popping, and the surfaces of the music slicker.

You can argue about production values, 70s v. 80s. But Smith's writing is so consistently good--compositionally, he has not watered a thing down-that this music holds up as well as any of his work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing albums, December 25, 2007
This review is from: Dreams of Tomorrow / Silhouettes (Audio CD)
I love this record, very good tunes....don't think Lonnie Liston gets enough recognition for his talents. I'm just 21 and enjoy this album a lot, it's too bad other young people don't check this one out. It's a lot better than all the garbage they play on the radio anymore. Anyways, check this out if you wanna hear some smooth, relaxing jazz.....classic stuff here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent, April 27, 2007

You have to be a LLS fan to know of his work. This is a good 80's style relaxing blend of pop and "smooth" jazz. You will not hear this on the local radios which is a shame. Since the individual albums are out of print this is a reasonable deal.

Combining two of Smith's harder to find records, you get a double dose of his sweeping keyboard runs anfd fusion-defining work. When Smith opts to try and convert 70s club tracks into 70s fusion tracks, the effect is a little underwhelming, but his ballads and mid-tempo tunes are unmatched in their original time period. Grooving is balanced with a healthy dose of heart and passionate playing. Good chill-out stuff, and the origins of (good) smooth jazz.

A pretty good place to start with Lonnie, and at the price they're selling it, you really can't go wrong.
