These were real people. They all had plans and dreams. Their stories, deaths, and the impact their deeds had on the war and the people around them have largely been forgotten except by their families. I personally remember the story of the four American advisers; Coyle, Ragin, Stone and Ward. Walter Cronkite opened the evening news with this incident. Young journalist Peter Arnett wrote a chilling first hand account of the battle. It was front page news in many papers around America. This was the most brutal battle in The Vietnamese War to that date and also the costliest in American lives lost (4). Americans Coyle, Ragin, Stone and Ward were numbers 275, 276, 277, 278 out of an eventual 65,000 Americans to die in the War. When the ambush was sprung, the South Vietnamese Commanding Officer asked for and received, permission for the South Vietnamese officers to leave the 500 man battalion of raw infantrymen to their fate. They left. The Americans stayed. Native American Indians would have called them "The Dog Soldiers". They saved the lives of nearly 300 South Vietnamese by staying and by dying.

This little book is a moving account of those men and women who gave their all during the Vietnam war. It is a touching tribute to those young lives lost.
