This review is from: I Dreamt Last Night: New Approach to the Revelations of Dreaming-and Its Uses in Psychotherapy (Hardcover)
in another of Boss' masterpieces. This volume consists mainly in examples of specific dream examples and their phenomenological, Daseinsanalytic explanations (for lack of a better term).Boss devotes a chapter and places emphasis on how the Daseinsanalytic approach differs from Freudian and Jungian "Interpretations." The approach Boss outlines refuses to categorize dream material in symbolic fashion, rather sticking to the material at hand that is revealed in the dreaming and the behavior with which the dreamer reacts to these immediate, sensual, physical, concrete events which impinge upon the Being-in-the-world of the existence as dreaming. In contrast, Boss' previous effort, his "Analysis of Dreams" tends more towards the theoretical elaboration of the phenomenlogical approach to understanding dreaming. The last chapter is devoted to outlining specific ways in which "Waking" and "Dreaming" existence differ. Boss delves further into this in this book than in Analysis of Dreams, which was an earlier book. In this reader's view it is amazing that Boss isn't more popular today. There is much "alive" in Boss' discussions and we only stand to gain in knowledge from studying Boss. Boss reminds us that behind every science lie philosophical presumptions, and that we err when we place what we attempt to deduce into what we presume, and our efforts become all backwards turning. By attempting to shed light on these assumptions and theoretical bases, Boss blazes a trail towards establishing a true foundation for the study of existence.
