3.0 out of 5 stars Imprecise; needs better proof-reading before publishing
Wanted to learn CSS so I bought Dreamweaver CS5.5 and this manual. It is in turns tedious and intuitive, but the lack of proof-reading by the editor of this text is unforgivable. For example, on pages 147-148, in the lesson about Absolutely Positioned CSS layouts, the left-right directions are opposite of what they should be. I stopped reading after wasting about 15...

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreamweaver is perfect for creating high-quality websites quickly!, October 22, 2010

This review is from: Dreamweaver CS5 Digital Classroom, (Book and Video Training covers CS5 & CS5.5) (Paperback)
I have used Digital Classroom books by the AGI Creative Team in the past, and found them very user-friendly. The Dreamweaver CS5 book is no exception. Easy-to-follow lessons and excellent DVD tutorials make this book perfect for someone looking to create high-quality websites without all the mysterious behind-the-scenes coding that can feel so intimidating to the casual user. I can see myself using Dreamweaver to update websites for volunteer organizations that I work with, and if you are a business owner this could be a huge help to you, too.

One thing that I found really great (and it seems like it should be a no-brainer, but we all know that it's not) is that the index for this book is brilliantly done. Anything that I need to look up quickly is there, which is a huge time-saver.

A quick note on coding: this book certainly does not focus hard on it, but there is enough information in the lessons that I felt like I was getting a good look at what is really happening on websites. I really enjoyed the lessons that use the Split View, where I could see both what the design elements are and the code that makes them happen.

I highly recommend this book to users like me - websites are not my career, but I enjoy the creative aspect of building them. With the skills I have learned using this book, and having it at my fingertips to reference in the future, I could easily see turning this new hobby into a lucrative home business!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Great Resource, December 21, 2010

This book is absolutely amazing. I'm transitioning from FrontPage and this made it easy, partly due to the index, which Dreamweaver's help function doesn't include. Dreamweaver's help directs you to an online "community-based" site which can make it tough to find specific commands and topics. The book completely eliminates that frustration.

The text was clear and easy to ready, along with full-color screen captures that show exactly what's being taught. It also includes references to other topics as applicable. Some of Dreamweaver's features can be accomplished in different ways and it's good to know how they can be useful from each perspective.

The DVD was incredible. Reading the book and going thru the chapters was great, but seeing an overview of each tutorial made it even better. That sort of demonstration is invaluable. I took a local one-day class for Dreamweaver but the instructor went so quick that it was hard to keep up. The DVD covers nearly the same topics and allows you to back up and repeat parts as needed.

My only gripe is because it's a standard-type manual, the binding makes it virtually impossible to lay the book down and keep the pages open to the part I want to study. My solution, which I recommend to others, was to take the book to my local print shop and have the binding cut away and holes drilled so that I could put it into a 3-ring binder.

For someone who's never built a website before, this is a perfect guide, and even for those who have (like me) it's an amazing resource to make my sites better with a lot less effort. I'm glad I chose this book and I think you will be, too.

Of course, the great price and free shipping only added to my enjoyment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book for novice to learn Dreamweaver, March 23, 2011

I have been trying to learn this program on an off for years using Lynda.com and other books. This is the first method that finally clicked. Unlike other books and tutorials, this book doesn't assume that you know anything about Dreamweaver. Watching the video tutorials, reading the book, and completing the work in the text, which goes a bit further in explanation, made me understand each way to set up graphics on a page and why you would choose one method over another. It's a very well written how-to. My favorite book is filled with sticky notes and dog-eared and now I refer to it often as I am building sites. If you are looking to learn Dreamweaver, start here.

I just finished an internship that required me to use MACROMEDIA Dreamweaver, which is ancient. I was required to use Dreamweaver CS5 as part of a web development class. Using this book, I was able to catch up on all the new features. It was very easy to read.

I'm halfway through this book and already have a much greater understanding of Dreamweaver than I did when I was using the DW for Dummies book. This book is great because it is very well organized, has a great sequence of lessons with increasing difficulty, and comes with a DVD with video lessons as a supplement to the written text. It seems that every time I find myself wondering what a particular setting/preference means, it is covered shortly after in the book.

It really is like a course. It has step by step instructions with very useful pictures to make sure you are seeing the correct things while working. My favorite part about it however, is the fact that it assumes you know NOTHING. Literally, it explains how to copy and paste, so one could argue that even somebody with very limited computer skills could figure out what to do in DW. The authors make literally 0 assumptions, and I can't wait to check out the other books in the series!

This is not your typical Beginners Dreamweaver tutorial book that overloads you with information, it's actually is a beginners tutorial book. If you're unfamiliar with Dreamweaver this is the best book for beginners. The book guides you step by step explaining all the contents in the panel making sure you won't get lost.

I truly appreciate the intelligent thought that went in to the planning and writing of this book. The authors feed the reader, bit by bit, "snippets" of new information so as not to overwhelm but do so in a logical and progressive manner that culminates in a comprehensive understanding of Dreamweaver CS5. I have read and used many Dreamweaver books and I have to say that this book makes the program less intimidating than any other. I'm wishing for a part 2 of this text to continue my Dreamweaver education in the style I've just become accustomed to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Concise and Helpful, April 24, 2011

I bought this book to supplement my textbook for my college course out of desperation. I was extremely confused and frustrated by the required textbook for the class (in fact, when I read a review of my textbook on Amazon, it stated the same exact thing). This book has made Dreamweaver crystal clear for me. I can go into Dreamweaver now and actually know how to make it work. I am still learning the program, but at least I have the confidence now that I can learn Dreamweaver. Thank you Digital Classroom for putting out an outstanding product.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an easy way to learn a confusing subject, August 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dreamweaver CS5 Digital Classroom, (Book and Video Training covers CS5 & CS5.5) (Paperback)
I'm a sexagenarian who went back to college after 30+ years. Keeping up with all those young folks who grew up using computers is challenging to say the least. I had two courses where I needed to use Dreamweaver but it was so confusing that even using the books that I purchased and the on line help didn't help a bit. This coming semester I will once again have to use Dreamweaver so I am spending the summer learning Dreamweaver from the folks that created it.

I was never the brainy type and I need a little extra time and help to catch on and this book provides it. Every step that you need to take is broken down into baby steps so it is impossible to get lost on what you are supposed to do. (Well unless you goof up and confuse the CSS Property Inspector with the CSS Styles panel.)

If I had to recommend a book to someone to learn Dreamweaver from I would most assuredly tell them to rush out and purchase the Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 Digital Classroom.
