I've never owned a Dremel but since their popularity has increased, I decided to get a basic 2 speed model. What have I used it for so far? I was able to use the metal cutting blade to cut down wire shelving to install in a closet at the top speed, and to cut a plastic connector that wasn't quite the right shape with the lower speed. I've used a grinding disk to file down a metal threshold that was too wide for a doorway and it did a fine job.

I have to install some new vanity light boxes, and hope to use the drywall attachment and cutting tool to cut the circles. I hadn't really checked out the attachements when I bought the item so am grateful for it's inclusion, otherwise I don't know how I would cut the circles. Update - need lots of practice here, my circles were not quite circles, but the drywall tool cut 5/8" drywall very easily!

It certainly is easier to use a Dremel than suffer from the repetative motion of using a hacksaw or a rasp on metal.

Can't wait to find other uses.

A tip - make sure to practice cutting or grinding to get used to how the Dremel handles.

I bought 2 of these Model 200 units as gifts for Xmas 2009. Both have a defective speed control.
Specs are low speed 15,000, high speed 35,000 rpm. Both have problem at low speed.
One unit varies at high speed, you can hear it.

I rigged an R/C hobby tachometer to the units.
One unit runs 5,000 rpm on low and the other moves between 3000-4000rpm.
Very poor design. Low speed is useless. Absolutely no power to polish anything.

This is a Dremel and I paid a higher price for Dremel quality.
Just plain junk. Sent both back for refund.

I purchased my dremel tool to assist me building dollhouses. I love the fact that it is small, lightweight, and easily maneuverable. I have done some cutting with one of the drill bits, and have used the sanding and grinding tools. I love the fact that dremel has so many accessories available for the dremel tool. I opted for a dremel tool that plugs-in basically because I didn't want to have to buy a replacement battery. Overall I am happy with my dremel tool purchase. The only con that I had with the item was the instruction booklet that came with it. I found the instruction booklet to have poor detail when it came to explaining the process for using the accessories that came with it. Maybe it was just the specific dremel tool that I got, but for the first time use the instruction manual lacked detail when explaining how to get the collet nut out of the collet. I found that taking the small end on the wrench tool sticking it between the collet & the collet nut and giving it a jiggle will cause the collet nut to be released easily from the collet.

I recently took on my first home improvement project (a bathroom) and of course have encountered problems. I call this tool my "problem solver." I was able to cut bolts, pvc pipe, wood, copper pipe (and deburr it). These items were all in tight spots that would have been difficult or impossible for me to get to with other tools.

Examples: A loose bolt on the side of the toilet near the tub. My bolt cutters didn't have enough clearance. Copper and PVC pipe in the bathroom vanity below the sink where once again, clearance was limited and the angle would have been hard for me to get any power into a manual saw. Trimming the baseboard near the floor that I can't imagine doing any other way.

My only complaint is that I find it difficult to grip without covering the vents and have played with different positions with mixed results. I'm a woman, so, my hand is smaller than that of most men but I also need to use both hands quite often to hold it. I also wish I had spent the money on a higher end model with more attachments AND more speed options because I use it much more than I initially thought I would.

I bought this initially as a way to trim my dogs nails. After a few months, I stumbled upon an accessory kit and started building things. I've added shelves, built wooden structures, buffed away rust, and all sorts of random fun things with this thing. I absolutely love this thing! It's a girl's best friend!

It works great, but I already knew that. I found the selection of bits that came with it disappointing, I had to buy one separately for almost 10 bucks. Then it didn't fit the collet and the thing comes with no other collets so I was going to have to go out and buy that. Fortunately I took one of my mom's so I avoided that expense. So a great deal suddenly seemed to be NOT.

It will work enough to get you out of that sticky nut on your vehicle! It also works great on toenails and calouses!

The tool itself is virtually silent compared to older models years ago, but the working tool bits cutting require earplugs for safety, intense high frequency sound -- and you may lean close to it to see clearly the work, increasing the need. The motors have undergone a lot of advances. Very old models do not take the attachments which screw onto the front, lacking the threaded front.

The spiral saw cutting attachment has a smaller hole opposite the main access opening to which the flexible hose of a mini-vacuum can be duck taped, and in turn to a full-size vacuum's larger hose. With a 1/8 cutting channel there's more sawdust than a regular saw, more than a mini vac might take, but the vacuum gets all but a little from the bottom of a work piece.

Can cut quite thick pieces by doing each side separately. To get straight cuts clamp a scrap board as guide onto the material cut.

Handy in being more compact than ordinary saws, for the occasional use. Stows in a kitchen drawer.
