I'm willing to try the 8000 model because I got to used to a cordless tool, so we'll see if that one holds up a little better. The good news is, that one has a replaceable battery so I have more confidence in it than I do with this one. The pistol grip is a nice feature, but I'm more than willing to sacrifice that for a tool that might actually stick around for a while.
However the battery now is dead and replacement will cost $42 + shipping back to the nearest Dremel service center. I thought that this is information that I would liked to have had on this tool before purchase. For some reason I assumed the battery was replaceable. I bought a corded 4000 in the meantime trying to decide if I really need a cordless tool for an additional $40 for maybe another 2 years... it goes by pretty quickly.
I emailed them and they said to send the unit back and it came back a week later all fixed !!! Its been back a month and already been used in about 10 projects !!!
I contacted Dremel and the price on a replacement battery which I've only found available via Dremel is almost the same as replacement tool. Looking for the battery took a lot of time and was simply wasted time.
The tool is pretty good ( The bearings could be a bit better) but there is a lock for easy changing of bits, nice range of speeds and the recharging station is handy. Too bad it has such a short life span.
Possible alternative options:

Why, oh why, did Dremel discontinue this wonderful little tool? I bought it from Woot back in 2008, and it's been my constant companion at work ever since. Read morePublished 6 months ago by catgrrl

This grinder is not as powerful as the plug-in types. It is useful for trimming or preparing nails for polish and can do some very light grinding in metals. Read morePublished 12 months ago by SSUMM
