5.0 out of 5 stars An Unsung Gem of a TV Movie, August 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dress Gray [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Featuring the young Alec Baldwin at his most compelling, Dress Grey (screenplay by Gore Vidal), is a political murder mystery with a Southern Gothic touch. Fans of "Advise and Consent," "The Best Man," etc. will enjoy the slightly over-the-top military-school machinations of a bunch of fine character actors like Hal Holbrook, Alexis Smith, Lloyd Bridges, Eddie Albert et al, and mystery fans won't be disappointed by the plot, which has plenty of twists and turns and even a couple of truly tense and suspenseful moments. Frank discussion of homosexuality in military school setting my be a turn-off for some (and a turn-on for others, for whom Baldwin and fellow students provide plenty of eye-candy.) Long enough for more than one bowl of popcorn, consistenly interesting, a must-see. Not sure what the diffence is between the slightly different prices and number of tapes listed here, I have viewed the double tape version, buy others at your own risk.

5.0 out of 5 stars A suspensful miltary thriller set in the 1960's!, March 26, 2000
This review is from: Dress Gray [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video deals with a miltary school in the 1960's. A cadethas died. The miltary are looking into the matter. Everyone issuspect. Alec Baldwin plays a cadet who gets set up during the trial of his fellow cadet. The movie is fast as the miltary is trying to avoid a media frenzy on the base. This movie also deals with gays and the miltary. There is a slight hint that maybe the cadet was killed by a gay lover. Of course the miltary back then would not like this stuff out to the media. The movie is a very suspenseful thriller in the 1960's! This video features an an all star cast Alec Baldwin(The Hunt For Red Ocober,Mecury Rising),Lane Smith(Superman TV series)Lloyd Bridges(the hot shot movies) and others! look for some up and coming stars in this video as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Please-when will this be on DVD?, February 18, 2012
This review is from: Dress Gray [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I saw this on TV back in the 80's and have been looking everywhere for it on DVD. I have the VHS and enjoy it over and over, but it would be great if someone could get this on DVD, it would sell so fast. I guess I'm just wishful thinking, as I've even tried contacting the distribution, production and other sources, to no avail. But it's a fantastic movie, a mini-series, but so well acted and I think one of Alec Baldwin's best performances, other then maybe Hunt for Red October. A great drama and you don't know who's the killer until the very end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Reviews, September 16, 2011

This review is from: Dress Gray [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I personally have not seen this yet, but hope to get my hands on one of these videos! The mixed reviews I have heard are from friends of mine who have either seen it or were a part of it. This movie was filmed on location in Roswell, NM at the New Mexico Military Institute(NMMI). I am an alum of the 'Tute and though was not attending while this was filmed, I can attest that it was filmed with actual cadets as extras and on the campus of an actual military school. NMMI was created in 1891 in the New Mexico Territory and has been a pivotal institution in Western United States history. Many officers of our nations military has graduated from there. Some celebrities have also attended there; Roger Staubach, Owen Wilson, etc. It continues today as a 4 year high school, 2 year junior college military boarding school that has a top notch education curriculum and continues to produce high caliber leaders and innovators.

4.0 out of 5 stars A compelling story of military academy intrigue, April 26, 2009

"Dress Grey" is a compelling story of intrigue, set within the "US Grant Military Academy" (a thinly-disguised pseudonym for West Point). A cadet's body has been found dead by drowning. The protagonist (Alex Baldwin, in a bravo performance, one of his best) learns that there is more to the death than meets the eye, and that a cover-up is in progress. The story develops quickly, and it is a powerful story of military politics, gays in the military, and other controversial topics. The film has a gothic feel to it, and constitutes first-rate entertainment. The supporting cast is excellent, and Hal Holbrook and Lloyd Bridges in particular turn in excellent performances.

This is a fine film, and it is extremely unfortunate that it is not available on DVD format. It should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great suspense movie, January 10, 2009
By
This review is from: Dress Gray [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Set in the height of the Vietnam era, a murder and cover-up within a military academy and the pursuit of the truth finds a young Alec Baldwin (his best role since Joshua on Knotts Landing) trying to save his own neck while politically uncovering the truth about what actually happened. Alec gives a passionate and believable performance of a lifetime in this role. Alive with military intrigue, this 2-part made for TV movie has everything to keep you on the edge of your seat for the 192-minutes of its running. Stellar performances by Hal Holbrook, Susan Hess, Tim Van Patten, & Lane Smith round out a fine cast for a tale of twisted intrigue and suspense.
