Not the same as the DVD but still hilarious,

This review is from: Dress to Kill (Audio CD)
This isn't the same record as the on the DVD. If you're choosing between them, I would definitely recommend the DVD: Eddie is playing for a bigger audience, the crowd is more receptive, and he's a bit more energetic. Since the DVD was for a live HBO special, you can tell that everyone knows the stakes are higher, and Eddie performs brilliantly. The DVD may also be advantageous becaus Eddie is a very physical comedian, and fully appreciating jokes oftentimes requires seeing him.
On the other hand, this album is good in its own right. It's mostly the same material (some chunks are left out from the DVD), and I found it interesting to see him reperform jokes. He's said in interviews that because of his dyslexia, he never writes his material down, so when he performs the same bit, it's always in slightly different language. Fans know that Eddie is always spinning at an extremely fast mental speeed, and jokes are always going to get lost between the cracks. I would definitely recommend this to fans, because I now understand so many jokes that I didn't quite hear or quite understand from the DVD. The material is some of the best that Eddie has ever produced. Choose one, perhaps, the CD or the DVD, but don't let this performance slip through your fingers!

Best if you haven't seen the HBO show,
This review is from: Dress to Kill (Audio CD)
The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's not the same show I saw on HBO (and I'm assuming is on the DVD) The show is still incredibly funny, but don't buy it unprepared. The "cake or death" bit isn't on this at all, but there are a few items here that weren't on the televised show. You can tell that this show was meant to be the "audio" version as Eddie describes things in word that he acted out on stage. (I thought one of the funniest bits was when the Pilgrims weren't meeting the American Indians and he did the gesture with his hands talking about their headpieces. He says it in this one) That also reminds me... the Engelbert Humperdinck is not in this one at all. Which makes sense, but man that was hilarious!
This is still incredibly funny, but if you've watched the HBO show over and over and are looking for something listen to in the car... the differences between this show and that might leave you slightly disappointed. I'm looking forward to either the next HBO showing or buying the DVD so that I can listen to that audio track in the car. (Also, I don't mean this to be a completely negative review. I understand the reason for the changes, but wanted this to be more of a warning. This is still a great CD)

I first saw "Dress to Kill" on HBO, but didn't even know what it was or who did it. It haunted me. I finally found out who it was and rejoiced. I bought in on VHS and showed it to family and friends. Everyone loved it. The true sign of a great comedian is someone who can get into you, be able to break it down and relate to you. You more apt to laugh if you understand. He rambles on about anything and everything with great knowledge of history. This Brit knows more about American History than most Yanks know about British History. Anyone that can make you laugh about history's most heinous acts has talent. When the DVD came out, I bought that, too. I even bought the CD so that I could take Eddie everywhere I go. Keep in mind that the CD isn't exactly word-for-word as the DVD. It was probably taped from a different performance on the tour and it doesn't contain everything. But I still Highly Recommend it. Eddie, you ARE fantastic!

This CD is very funny. But I had heard another version that was copied off the computer and many of the funniest bits were left out of this CD. There are no "flags", no "tea and cakes or death", no "crazy queen" or snowboarding. What's left is still hilarious.

It is not enough to own the DVD of this wonderful performer, at least for me I want a copy to carry in the car. Eddie Izzard's mind is a great companion as I drive and is far superior to anything on radio. His humor never grows stale and one can listen to this award winner many times over. Highly recommended!

Review of this CD-
If you saw the DVD for Dress to Kill you will be dissapointed in the CD. The performance isn't quite as on, and the entire Tea and Cake or Death bit is misssing as is the french encore. The man is still the funniest comic I have ever come across, but the brilliance doesn't shine through Review of Eddie Izzard- I love him. The humor is smart and clean (other than maybe 3 lines from the puberty and lost my virginity bits and swearing) The jokes aren't fed to you and he has the most original humor I've heard. He reminds me of Terry Pratchett in a wierd way. If your a fan of Discworld you'll probably enjoy Eddie Izzard. Not that the two are remotely related Review of Dressed to Kill in relation to other shows- On DVD, the best. It's a run through recent history branching into various hysterical tangents on everything and it's just amazing.

Very good, though I could not find the "French" part, which I was expecting. I guess this is a different version from the one on Youtube.

Eddie Izzard's humour is intelligent, original and creative. Unlike most stand-ups he is well-educated and well-informed. We first watched the DVD of his San Francisco "Dressed to Kill" presentation and I think we prefer the CD where the "cross-dressing thing" is not a distraction. Having said that, he sends up "cross-dressing" quite delightfully in a part of this CD where he talks about the prospects of recruiting and using a "cross-dressed" unit of army soldiers to surprise the enemy. Whilst he fairly frequently uses the "F" word, he's not like say, Billy Connolly, where the use of word just in itself is supposed to be funny.
My wife and I would both highly recommend this CD - it's just a pity it doesn't include the segment on making one's way in France with the standard French phrases they teach you in school.

Not the same show as DVD,

This review is from: Dress to Kill (Audio CD)
I just got this CD today, and I am really disappointed. I had ordered the Dress to Kill DVD and absolutely love it. But this audio recording is not from the same show. No Englebert Humperdink, no "tea and cake or death". Even the bits that were on there were not the same - Stone Henge, Heimlich Manouver, etc. If you had not seen the DVD, it would probably do nicely. But since I had seen it, it was just not the same.
