They Keep Getting Better,
By Dominic Smith (Australia) - See all my reviews

This would have to be one of the best-ever Australian rock acts. There's no shortage of kicks to this powerful album. From the Rickenbacker-powered opener, "Judge Roy" through to "Whatcha Doin' to Me" and the thumping pop-rocker "Get Up", which was inspired by cartoonist Michael Leunig, to the mellower offerings of Damage and Beautiful Girl this album oozes class all the way. All in all a wonderfully balanced, very satisfying rock album.

Simply, I say this is the best rock and roll band I have seen in many years. I have seen this in my native country and have seen them here in the States and I have been so fortunate and happy to see them ANYTIME. This CD is brilliant work and the songs are not forgettable anytime.

For anyone with a love of rock n' roll you will love You am I. DMS is the epitome of rock and pop. From Beatlesque tunes to the Stones like "End O' the Line," Tim Rogers never ceases to amaze me. Although, known in Australia it is a shame that YAI do not get the fanfare here. You Am I are one of the greatest bands around right now and DMS proves this very fact.

How not to sell a million albums,

1) Write beautiful, intelligent grown-up lyrics2) Add kick ass music 3) Boot your American producer for trying to make you dumb down your sound to sell a million records Quite simply, the best band on Earth enters the new millineum with an additional guitarist and a great new CD. Prime cuts are "Beautiful Girl", "Get Up", "Weeds" and "Kick a Hole In the Sky". Sadly, I don't think this CD comes with the surprise Tim Rogers solo CD, "The Temperance Union", but Dress Me Slowly is good enough on its own. Buy it!!

Rockin' good time,

You Am I would have to consider themselves unlucky not to be better known outside of Australia. While their countrymen in The Living End, Silverchair and Powerderfinger have gone on to success overseas, You Am I remain soley Australian favourites. I reckon Dress Me Slowly is the best album they have released, just ahead of Hourly Daily. The addition of lead guitarist David Lane which makes them a 4-piece has fleshed out the sound, and he provides some great lines, in particular in Whatcha Doin To Me, Weeds and End O' the Line. Tim Rogers continues to write inspired lyrics for his tunes, and must now be included in the class of Neil Finn and Paul Kelly. This album ranges from the typical You Am I horn-infused stomp of Doug Sahm, the emotionally fragile Damage (I think the best Tim has written), and the rocking Satisfied Mind. The album closes with End O' The Line, which takes much of its inspiration from the Rolling Stones. If anyone is lucky enough to catch You Am I live (esp on a Saturday night) you will hear these songs in all their glory. Highly recommended!
