Editorial Reviews

Review

Dress up your 12" to 18" dolls in this wide range of knitted and crocheted outfits. There is something for every occasion from fun to formal, and from simple to more complex according to ability. I think that my favorite features of this book are the wonderful staged photographs showing dolls clad in their new clothes doing various things. Dolls in pirate outfits play on a beach, others wearing winter outfits are in the snow with a snowman, or tracking through the long grass on a walk. These are not Barbie type dolls but the more traditional type of stockier toy more like a baby doll, only mostly with hair (there are a few baby outfits too). This book was originally published in Norway, so expect the yarns mentioned to be different although any yarn crafter worth their salt ought to be able to find something to substitute. Hooks and needles are given in both UK and US sizes, and patterns are in word format with a few charts. The level of expertise would be improvers upwards, but the patterns vary in complexity. It is an imaginative mix of everyday costumes and those for best, or for playing make believe. Some dolls sport everyday children's clothes, others are dressed in party best or as explorers, pirates, fairytale characters or a 20s flapper. There are accessories too such as a fairytale tent for a princess, toy monkey for the safari section, bunting for the party etc. adding to the fun. There is no index which I found frustrating when looking for something in particular, and anybody wanting a couple of "refresher course" pages of stitches had better look elsewhere. Overall this is a good book that does what it says on the cover, i.e. provide patterns for dolls clothes.-Myshelf.com

I am an experienced knitter and have taught knitting. This book has been very frustrating. While the illustrations are beautiful, the text and instructions are extremely difficult. The text is very faint, being a pale gray rather than black. The instructions are written in paragraph form, making following the pattern very confusing. The instructions are not written chonologically so the knitter has to try to figure out what part of the pattern to do next. There are no updates on the number of stitches made while trying to follow the pattern. There are no measurements for the clothing and dolls, making the sizing of garments challenging. I'm knitting for 4 18" dolls, all different brands and sizes. The only constant is their heights. Not much fun. If I wasn't one to persevere, I would have given up long ago.

I appreciate that this is a translation from another language, but the end result should be useable. I wish the
author would give it another try.

I do not recommend this book to anyone.

Unless you are an experience knitter, this book is not for you. Instruction are vague and written in paragraph form.

I really liked how the instructions were written as I don't like if instructions are complicated and this book make th instructions simple

The designs are lovely, as is the photography. The level of detail on the garments is excellent. I like the decision to include patterns for multiple doll sizes (my child's favorite dolls are smaller than 18") and the reminder that a flexible fabric will stretch to fit a range of sizes.

I am experienced with both knitting and crochet and the directions are comprehensible enough, if a bit terse.

However, I am surprised to find no schematics, gauge, or other measurements given. Everything is "cast on X stitches, work for Y rows" with no mention of the actual garment size. Yes, I can measure the dolls, figure out a reasonable gauge for the yarn, calculate what I would need to cast on, and eyeball it to fudge against the author's numbers. But once I've done all that, I hardly need the book!

The clothes look lovely and should be fun to knit, but they are not. The patterns are so poorly written in many cases they do not make sense. I am an experienced knitter and have had to redo many rows as they simply won't work as written. With no gauge and specific yarn and few measurements it is hard to get the correct size. Not a good book for anyone - experienced or not! There are many book out there with adorable patterns and easy to read and follow instructions, with great sizing. Buy one of them instead of this one.

This book is OK, but if you are one who crochets you will be disappointed. There are 3 times the number of Kit patterns in the book than Crochet patterns. If I remember correctly the pants I made came out ok, but called for a 3.0 crochet hook. I could not find one except in the steel hooks and it was so small it was worthless.
If you are making a book for crochet and knit, please make the number of patterns equal.
