About the Author

Capt. James Atkinson Smith loved the outdoors. Born in Connecticut, a state rich in wildlife, Smith learned how to hunt, fish and trap by age 12. Through trial and error and the coaching of his father and grandfather, he perfected his skills at field- dressing, skinning and preparing all the animals or birds he bagged.

Being an accomplished marksman had of course helped his hunting endeavors. As a U.S. Marine during the Korean conflict, he earned the Expert Rifleman's Badge and became an instructor in the use of small arms. The title "Captain" comes from Smith's 30-plus years in law enforcement. He began his career in 1952, as Chief Constable in his home state and later became Deputy Chief of Police. He held a sixth degree black belt in judo and karate and he taught defense procedures at various police academies.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book covers it all., January 3, 1999

This book is filled with all the information you need to care for your game. Everything from big game to small game, upland birds to waterfowl are covered. The information covers species description and then illustrates with hand drawings, step by step, the process for each animal. For each animal a few recipes are even included. This book is great and even helped me with my first Elk with no instruction from anyone. An excellent book for field dressing all game.

I live in Scotland and had been looking for this book for some time. I had to cross the pond to get it and have not been disappointed. It is a comprehensive guide to "Dressing Em Out" dealing with many commonly hunted mammals and birds and each species is dealt with individually. The accompanying text is both relevant and informative and gives clear instructions on how to deal with your kill.
It includes many useful hunting and survival tips. I was also very pleased with the service offered by the supplier.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive, educational and entertaining guide, August 17, 2005

I found this guide to present very practical instructions on how to field dress wild game but also how to hunt the animals as well as how to cook them after they are dressed. The diagrams and written instructions were very clear. While it will still take some practice to become adept at field dressing, the instructions provided should help even a novice to deal with game that they have harvested.
